Candidate Overview

Maria Ordoñez is an organizer & activist and the youngest woman to be running for City Council in New York City. From being elected in 2019 as one of the youngest County Committee members in Manhattan to being elected as the youngest 2020 Presidential delegate in New York State to represent Bernie Sanders in the DNC. Maria is a life-long Harlem resident who is running a grassroots campaign fighting for the many.

Communications Director Job Description

The Communications Director is in charge of making sure the campaign gets its message out through social media platforms, media outlets, email, press, etc. The Communications Director manages the candidate's communications strategies to reach voters in the district. They are in charge of all of the campaign's interactions with the media. They build relationships with the press, communicate with the media as the key spokesperson, set up interviews and identify media opportunities for the campaign. They may help write and develop campaign literature, and draft speeches for the candidate. The communications director should have prior experience and contacts with the media, be a good writer and communicator, and be a pro-active thinker and strategist. They will oversee all the communication aspects of the campaign along with the candidate. Will need to have knowledge on how to write emails, media advisories, and press releases.

Responsibilities Include

  • Building relationships with the media.
  • Setting up interview opportunities for the candidate.
  • Writing copy for internal and external communications (fundraising letters, newsletters, emails, website, social media, etc.)
  • Maintaining the website, Twitter, Facebook and overall online presence.
  • Train communications volunteers and interns.
  • Develop and execute a strategic communications and digital plan.
  • Conduct digital voter contact.
  • Maintaining a media presence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least one cycle of campaign experience.
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills.
  • Good marketing sense: developing messages, slogans and tactics that create buzz and draw​​s attention.
  • Good computer skills and knowledge of database programs, and social media and online tools management.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast paced, changing environment, strong time management, organizational skills, and detail oriented.
  • Experience in compiling press clippings, research.
  • Knowledge in graphic design, InDesign, NGP, WordPress, HTML, & Google Suite is a plus.
  • Spanish fluency a plus.
  • Knowledge on videography and photography a plus.

Compensation

Payment will be bi-weekly, commensurate with experience. Pay: $15 - $20 an hour.
