Job Title: Statewide Organizer

Reports To: Gabriel Vidal, Statewide Organizing Manager

Status: Full-Time (average 40 hours/week), Non-Exempt, overtime eligible

Salary: $23.00 / Hour

Essential Duties and Functions

(The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)

Grassroots GSA Development and Basebuilding [Regional/Statewide]: 35%

Currently, this position supports statewide work and has priority areas in Oakland, San Francisco, and Contra Costa County.

  • Build and carry out a youth and GSA basebuilding strategy in priority areas throughout California, primarily with remote and digital engagement
  • Support registered GSA clubs throughout California
  • Cultivate strong and thriving GSA clubs in priority schools [online and limited in-person if it becomes safe] through regular site visits, one-on-ones, GSA trainings, and coaching
  • Experiment with local field organizing strategies to support the proliferation of virtual GSAs locally and statewide
  • Engage in proactive virtual outreach
  • Liaise with GSA advisors and school personnel to support GSA clubs as needed
  • Identify youth leaders interested in youth organizing and activism and connect with GSA Network engagement opportunities
  • Assess opportunities for school-based campaigns and connect youth with GSA Network campaign opportunities 
  • Work with local youth leaders to host entry-level GSA meetups online (or in-person if appropriate) depending on local interest
  • Assess local and regional conditions and report back to YO team and participate in and carry out YO team statewide strategy

Grassroots GSA Development and Basebuilding: Trainings [Statewide]: 20%

  • Coordinate logistics for online training series for youth throughout CA and in priority regions in CA
  • Conduct outreach for trainings and coordinate youth trainers to support with outreach
  • Develop and adapt curriculum/materials for skills and political education trainings designed to build the skills of GSA members and leaders
  • Train youth trainers to lead trainings through TOTs, one-on-ones, facilitation workshops
  • Facilitate trainings as needed at GSA Network and partner events
  • Contribute to evaluation of trainings' effectiveness
  • Plan summer political education program for youth in partnership with other staff leads
  • Identify youth leaders interested in youth organizing and activism and connect with GSA Network engagement opportunities (conduct follow-up and one-on-ones)
  • Assess regional and statewide conditions and report back to YO team 

Policy Campaigns & Alliance Building [Regional]: 5%

  • Represent GSA Network in local coalitions that advance positive school climate and education justice, including Dignity in Schools Campaign, Bay Area
  • Recruit and support youth to represent GSA Network in local coalitions as appropriate

Communications & Social Media [Statewide]: 15%

Partner with other Communications lead in youth organizing team to carry out these responsibilities: 

  • Create and draft posts for regional Facebook page 2-3x a week
  • Create instagram posts on weekly-biweekly basis with content that centers trans queer youth of color activism and organizing (subject to Communications approval)
  • Assist in the creation of blog posts, videos and other media about the intersectional issues facing queer youth of color
  • Design graphic assets including flyers, instagram posts, and other social media-oriented designs
  • Explore instagram video content 
  • Collaborate and liaise with the Communications team to support Communications team initiatives and goals, with the support of Director - Youth Organizing.

Administrative: 10%

  • Regularly track relevant activities, contacts, and youth participation through GSA Network database 
  • Submit and keep track of individual expenses and timesheets

Other: 15%

  • Collaborate on and exercise leadership in Youth Organizing team initiatives and all staff initiatives that allow the organization to respond and adapt in emerging conditions
  • Daily communication and use of organizational communication and task management channels 
  • Implement personal workplan with a weekly workplan or task management system, with supervisor's approval

Required Qualifications

Organizing

  • Strong relational and socio-emotional skills to build relationships with young people and school staff
  • Ability to strategically use various tactics for reaching new youth and GSAs and activating the base
  • Proven skills for grassroots organizing and understanding of basic components: basebuilding, leadership development, and campaigning
  • Familiarity with basic organization building and organizational development knowledge and skills
  • Comfort with assertive recruitment and agitation in organizing conversations 
  • Ability to carry out repetitive tasks (i.e. the outreach grind)

Youth Leadership Development and Facilitation

  • Ability to support youth leadership through youth-adult partnership 
  • Facilitation skills with an ability to lead interactive activities and discussions for skill development and political education for youth
  • Ability to develop curriculum and training guides that can be implemented by other facilitators
  • Ability to break down complex political and social justice concepts in discussion and curriculum
  • Proficient in writing and computer skills for drafting training curriculum and developing presentations

Project Management

  • Strong organization skills to break down a project into multiple tasks and carry out tasks
  • Ability to work collaboratively towards shared goals and objectives
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software (Microsoft Office and Google Drive) 
  • Familiarity or willingness to learn digital management and communication tools such as Asana, Slack, Zoom and /or Google Calendar
  • Attention to detail 

Values and Characteristics 

  • Be a self-starter who is comfortable taking initiative and seeks guidance to follow through on projects and tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and with people from a variety of different racial, ethnic, socio-economic, ability, educational, religious, sexual, gender, and generational backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated passion for trans and queer youth leadership and empowerment, extensive knowledge or personal experience with the intersectional issues facing low-income trans and queer youth of color, and a commitment to social justice.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to work remotely and/or in an office environment.
  • Must be able to operate and use a computer and phone.
  • Must be able to work at a computer for a prolonged period of time.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly in English and adapt voice and tone to social media.
  • Willingness and ability to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Willingness and ability to travel statewide or nationally (if it is safe to travel)
  • Valid California Driver's License, clean driving record, reliable access to a car with insurance (if it is appropriate to carry out in-person organizing)
  • Successful applicants will undergo a background check, in compliance with GSA Network's progressive background check procedure.
