[GAINPOWER.org: Jobs That Are Left] Durham for All Seeking Data & Digital Organizer!

Job Announcement:
Data & Digital Organizer Fellowship
Durham For All

Durham For All is seeking a full-time Data & Digital Organizer for a two-year fellowship to guide and support the development of grassroots political power in Durham, NC. The fellow will maintain our data systems and lead our digital organizing efforts, and they will be supervised by our staff member leading communications work. We are seeking a start date of March 1st.

About Durham For All

Durham For All is a multiracial, cross-class grassroots political organization, whose mission is to expand democracy and create a government that works for all of us. We work on electoral and issue campaigns that advance our vision of homes, healthcare, education, economy, justice, and democracy for all. The grassroots political power we have been building has played a leading role in the wave of progressive people of color who have successfully won local elections. Durham For All is an affiliate of the Carolina Federation, which is a statewide organization that brings local people together across race and the rural-urban divide to build political and electoral power in their own communities and across North Carolina.

Our Challenge

In 2021 and 2022, we are focused on translating our progressive majorities in local government into concrete policy wins around housing, living wages, and community-based alternatives to policing while continuing to build a base rooted in people of color and poor and working-class communities. The challenge in front of Durham For All is how to grow and develop a multiracial, cross-class base large enough to not only defeat the far right at every level of government but also to transform government so that it works for all of us.

As we move into 2022, we must contest not only for local political power, but also for the future of the state and the nation. North Carolina continues to be a key battleground between the far right and our vision of multiracial, progressive populism. Our ability to demonstrate the power of transformative organizing to move new people into action will be put to the test.

About the Data & Digital Organizer Fellowship

We are looking to hire a Data & Digital Organizer to maintain our data systems and lead our digital organizing efforts. We are seeking a fellow who would:

  • be thrilled to help grow innovative political organization and power in Durham by working interdependently within a multiracial, cross-class team

  • fit our culture of courageous leadership and playful camaraderie, and

share our deep love of people and ferocious commitment to power and transformation.

The Data & Digital Organizer will work with our staff to support multiracial, multi-issue grassroots political power in Durham. Our work is deeply relational at its core, and we also seek to utilize the most effective technical tools and tactics possible to build our membership base and reach voters across Durham communities. The fellow's primary role is to support—through data management and digital organizing—the continued integration of our data-driven electoral work with our relational organizing work.

Specifically, the Data & Digital Organizer will:

  • Manage our contact database and website

  • Coordinate the overall data needs of Durham For All

  • Provide data support for our voter and member contact efforts, including canvassing, phone banking, texting and other voter contact methods

  • Support in the development of digital organizing strategies that will grow our membership, fundraise, and move residents into taking action

  • Lead in the implementation of digital organizing strategies

  • Manage our online presence across a multitude of social media platforms and online advocacy tools, such as mass emails, letter campaigns, petitions, etc.

  • Coordinate with teammates to develop narrative content for mass emails and social media posts

The ideal candidate has community organizing experience, has experience managing organizational social media accounts, and is passionate about moving people from online to offline engagement.

What We're Looking For

These are the types of skills, competencies, and qualities we're looking for in our Data & Digital Organizer. We offer these as a broad outline; it is not necessary that applicants have experience in all skills and competencies:

  • Commitment to building power through elections, issue campaigns, and organizing, centered around the leadership of working-class people and people of color.

  • Commitment to interdependence—bringing your best, relying on the strengths of others and the knowledge that we are responsible for each other's well-being.

  • Attention to detail and timelines; an ability to execute complicated sequential steps with rigor and precision, often on a tight deadline.

  • Ability to concisely communicate across a gamut of social media tools.

  • Experience with developing and implementing digital organizing strategies.

  • Familiarity with online electoral/advocacy tools and constituent relationship management (CRM) tools.

  • Ability to clearly communicate with patience and humility data-related information to audiences who may not have much data background.

  • Experience with voter contact programs and experience in the use of data in candidate or issue-based campaigns.

  • Experience with spreadsheets and data manipulation.

  • Experience leading skills trainings, meetings, town halls or other forums for member and community engagement.

  • Experience advising and managing volunteer leaders and/or staff, providing clear direction and support that enables the success of others and builds their long-term commitment.

  • Experience participating in a volunteer or staff capacity on an electoral campaign or a local issue campaign.

  • Ability to accurately translate English-language writing into Spanish.

We believe those most impacted by systemic oppression must lead the fight for our collective liberation, and we strive to center people of color, poor and working-class people, women, LGBTQIA+ people, immigrants, and people with disabilities. Candidates who hold one or more of these identities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Location and Travel

Durham For All is working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. When office work resumes, the position requires working out of our office, which is currently located in Durham's Lakewood neighborhood. When in-person events resume, the position also requires traveling to and from events. The fellow must be able to provide their own transportation.

Supervision

This position will report directly to our staff member leading communications work.

This is a full-time, two-year fellowship salaried at $45,000, with additional funding dependent on our pay equity practices. Benefits include employee health and dental insurance, short- and long-term disability insurance coverage, monthly remote work stipend, vacation, and other paid time off.
