Reports to: Communications Director


Location: Remote based in New York City


Salary: Up to $4,500 per month, based on experience



Position Summary


Eliza Orlins, a progressive champion and the only public defender in the race for Manhattan District Attorney, is looking for an experienced communications professional to serve as deputy communications director. This position will be a key member of the communications staff and will eventually manage the responsibility of sharing Orlins' message.


Responsibilities include: writing press releases, talking points, and rapid response for press and digital; maintaining press lists; pitching and developing relationships with reporters; staffing Orlins at events and interviews; fielding press inquiries; managing communications fellows; and organizing press events. 



Applicants should:


  • Have a commitment to progressive values and a passion for decarceration;

  • Be an excellent writer who can draft a press release on the fly and think deeply and strategically about the best op-ed to write and place;

  • Be a voracious consumer of news and have a deep understanding of the media landscape;

  • Know how to pitch a story, set up a release on embargo, and staff a tough interview;

  • Be skilled at multitasking and working under tight deadlines in a dynamic environment;

  • Have high standards for their own work and strong attention to detail;

  • Be a self-starting, responsible, creative and innovative team player willing to try new approaches to solving old problems.



It will be a bonus if the applicants: 


  • Have experiencing working directly with and giving feedback to a principal;

  • Have connections to media in NYC or a demonstrated ability to build media relationships;

  • Have at least one cycle of campaign experience, ideally in communications;

  • Have experience with NGP Van, MailChimp, TV Eyes and other campaign or media relations tools;
