Part-Time Legislative Session Communications Director:

Our Power is seeking applications for the position of a part-time (20 hours/week) Communications Director for the current Maine legislative session. This position will ensure robust communications support for a legislative agenda to transform Maine's utility sector from an investor-owned, worst-in-the nation, obstacle to economic growth and clean energy innovation – to a responsive, ratepayer-owned, affordable, first-in-the-nation engine of economic growth and opportunity.

The ideal candidate will have deep understanding of effective modes of communication, experience with legislative campaigns, and the ability to rapidly become fluent in an area of law governing utilities, quasi-governmental organizations, and innovative public-purpose structures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate with legislative bill sponsor, Our Power coalition, and other advocates in the 130th Maine Legislature to expand consumer-owned power in the Maine electricity sector

  • Organize and host "five-on-one" constituent/legislator meetings to lobby individual legislators to support consumer ownership

  • Work with Our Power social media personnel, including overseeing social media plan. Proficiency in online social media platforms and social media advertising required.

  • Generate grassroots petitions, email alerts and other online and offline materials. Experience with Action Network or similar organizing platform a must.

  • Experience with traditional media, press releases, earned media necessary

  • Assist in maintenance and organization of essential lists and data

  • Research, speak out and testify as capacity allows

In addition to these communication tasks, the position includes some elements of organizing, particularly in relation to the coalition of organizations participating in this campaign through public hearings, direct legislator contact, emails, phones and other actions.

The ideal candidate will be a team player with enthusiasm for and dedication to a just clean energy transition.  Strong organizing, communications, digital and/or policy background a must.  Energy policy expertise is helpful but not essential.

Compensation:  $3000/month for 20 hours per week for the 2021 Maine legislative session. Possibility of position continuing through Fall 2022. This will be determined after the legislative session.

Application Deadline:  Position will remain open until filled.

To Apply:  Submit a cover letter and resume by going to www.mp4mp.org. The cover letter should be concise, compelling, and outline the specific ways in which you would be a good fit for this position.
