About Us

The rising cost of living, stagnating incomes, increase in unreliable work, and concentration of wealth in too few hands undermines the vision for a modern social contract: the idea that if you work hard and play by the rules, you can get ahead in America. The pandemic has only served to lay bare this brittleness. Now, record unemployment and slashed wages are pushing Americans over the financial edge, with Black and Latinx communities hit hardest by the virus and economic crisis. Without new, bold thinking, we risk leaving millions of people behind.

We can make a different set of choices. We can build an economy where caregivers can make ends meet with only one job, where individuals can weather unexpected economic shocks without falling into poverty, and where communities aren't decimated when a corporation leaves town. We believe that when all have the opportunity to meet our basic needs and move up the economic ladder as well as the power to choose the products we buy, the employers we work for, and the way we spend our time, our families and communities thrive.

The Economic Security Project (ESP) challenges the current status quo by catalyzing ideas that build economic power for all Americans. We serve as a convener, strategist, funder, and campaigner. We disburse grants, identify gaps, develop communications research to inform the movements, and coordinate events and convenings to encourage investment and action from others. We aim to support emerging leaders in the economic justice field and ensure they have the networks, know-how, and resources to succeed. Because we believe in delivering concrete victories for families, we run campaigns in partnership with state and federal organizations to pass policies that improve people's lives.

We've identified two fights we think we can win: (1) a guaranteed income that would provide an income floor for all Americans and (2) anti-monopoly action to rein in the unprecedented concentration of economic power. We pick our fights based on our analysis of where a little push could turn an idea from a trend into a substantive intervention that improves the lives of Americans.
