About the Position:
We are seeking a politically savvy Executive Director to lead the operations of the organization and oversee the design, delivery, and quality of our programs and services. The Executive Director position is responsible for managing the organization's budget, program and staff. The organization's annual budget is $300,000 at a minimum for an organization of 3-5 staff. The position will primarily focus on outreach and fundraising – executing program also falls within the ED's purview, budget permitting. This position in based in Washington, DC. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Board to further the organization's mission and vision and develop strategies for achieving organizational success and long-term financial viability.
- Create annual operating plans that support the organization's strategic direction.
- Manage the organization's resources within budget guidelines.
- Submit annual budgets, program and work plans to the Board.
- Oversee and develop avenues of fundraising through traditional opportunities, research new funding sources, broaden strategies to attract new streams of revenue.
- Build effective human capital by hiring qualified staff, managing human resources, and overseeing personnel policies and procedures.
- Act as a liaison between the organization and the community; building relevant professional relationships with peer organizations, individuals, especially those with a stake in professional development, diversity, and progressive politics.
- Represent the organization at public functions and make effective presentations in support of the mission.
- Collect and analyze information to measure and evaluate the success of the organization's program efforts; make recommendations and refine or change programs
- Stay abreast of current trends related to the organization's mission and services and anticipate future trends likely to have an impact on its work.
- Manage the organization's staff through training, goal setting, planning and evaluation, along with recruiting new staff to build the organization.
Skills and Qualifications:
Fund Development
- Long-Term Planning & Maintenance. Ability to lead a team through multi-streamed fund development plan that engages the whole organization, projects annual growth and results in financial sustainability. Experience maintaining clear and accessible tracking systems.
- Communications. Capacity to articulate our mission, vision, values and program to various audiences in order to attract support for the organization.
- Institutional Support. Ability to prospect, develop relationships and complete proposals in a timely and effective manner.
- Member Engagement. Experience in creating and maintaining organization wide efforts to raise monies from individuals.
Organizational Development & Strategic Visioning
- Strategic Planning. Capacity to lead a multiple stakeholder process that identifies a compelling vision and strategies to build upon our history, contributes to social justice movement building and expands our reach and impact.
- Strategic Implementation. Experience in translating vision and strategies into a coherent plan that all stakeholders can effectively carry out.
- Structural Support. Ability to develop and maintain internal structures and communication systems that reflect our vision and values, particularly those related to our core issue areas.
- Consensus Based Staff Management. Commitment to managing a team to lead and carry out its work in a collective, accountable, self-reflective and supportive manner. Uphold staff accountability structures, through consistent feedback and our model.
Financial Management & Administration
- Ensure that financial systems comply with non-profit status protocols.
- Oversee income and expenses to maintain organizational stability.
- Support staff in managing program budgets, timelines, and evaluations.
- Prepare documentation for internal and external reporting in a timely fashion.
Program Planning & Implementation
- Help the development of programs that advance our strategic vision.
- Support staff to implement our programs in an effective manner.
- Build relationships and represent us publicly to develop strong community partnerships.
