About the SEIU Pennsylvania State Council:
The SEIU Pennsylvania State Council, which represents over 80,000 workers in the areas of health care, public services, property services, laundry and distribution, coordinates the joint political and legislative work of SEIU Locals in the Commonwealth. We are part of SEIU, the largest and fastest-growing union in North America.
About the Position:
The Legislative Director focuses on the legislative priorities, both offensive and defensive, important to each of the locals and the State Council as a whole, building and maintaining relationships, tracking the status of legislation, educating and updating local leaders and staff, and working hand-in-hand with staff and leaders to develop high-level strategic plans.
Direction and Decision Making:
The Legislative Director reports directly to the State Council Executive Director.
Responsibilities:
- · Build and maintain relationships with PA state legislators and work with local leaders and staff to develop relationships on multiple levels
- · Work with State Council and local political, communications and field and member engagement staff to develop an integrated strategic program that effectively wields organizing power towards important legislative issues
- · Track offensive and defensive priorities in the legislative agenda and educate locals on where things are at and how they can help move things in the right direction
- · Coordinate with communications staff on the development of legislative talking points to be sent to local leaders and staff on policy issues
- · Disseminate regular memorandums on the state of policy in Harrisburg
- · Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
- 4 or more years of legislative and/or political experience with one or more of the following types of organizations: progressive issue advocacy organizations, labor unions, community organizations, progressive elected officials and political campaigns
- Proven ability to build relationships with elected officials and other decision-makers
- Demonstrated experience tackling complex policy issues and conveying the salient points to a broad audience
- Excellent analytical and writing ability
- The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to the mission, vision, and values of SEIU
Physical Requirements:
The position is based out of Harrisburg, PA. Work in the field and travel is required.
