Media Outreach Specialist

Working America, the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, is the fastest growing organization for working people in the country.  With more than 3 million members recruited since 2003, Working America organizes and mobilizes people who do not have a union on the job in support of working families' issues.

The Media Outreach Specialist carries the voice of America's working families to the media, to leaders and to the general public through various media and communications outlets.

DUTIES:

Media outreach and events

  • Provide communications and media support for Working America nationally and in target states.
  • Perform monitoring of media clips and compile and distribute media reports and analysis.
  • Draft, edit, and distribute organizational press releases, background pieces, advisories, fact sheets, talking points, and other news-related information, as well as flyers and campaign materials.
  • Write, edit, and place op-eds and letters to the editor.
  • Conceive and direct media events based on natural and created news opportunities.
  • Develop strategies to improve Working America's public image using a full range of media.
  • Conduct media training with Working America staff, activists and leaders at all levels.

Liaison

  • Initiate contact with and respond to inquiries from print, radio and television journalists, pitching story ideas and providing information to generate positive media coverage of the labor movement;
  • Work with field-based communicators at the affiliate, state and local levels to plan media events, coordinate consistent message delivery, and provide communications support for activities of the labor movement at every level.
  • Communicate and coordinate with donors to plan and implement briefings, fundraisers and other events.

Reporting

  • Reports to Communications Director
  • Prepares and submits regular and ad hoc reports on departmental activities as required.
