Media Matters for America -- a progressive, Washington, D.C-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. The Media Matters Economic Research team provides original research and analysis concerning conservative media misinformation of major economic developments as they relate to public policy decisions at the local, state, and federal levels of government. The Economic Researcher works directly with the Economic Program Director in producing content and research.

 Responsibilities:

  • Content Generation:  The Economic Researcher is responsible for providing quick response blogs and research items debunking emerging conservative misinformation on the economy pursuant to direction from the Economic Program Director. Additionally, the position assists the Economic Program Director with designing and implementing long-term projects that inject progressive messaging on the economy into media debates.

  • Research: The Economic Researcher is responsible for identifying and preparing for emerging economic stories. This includes keeping up to date with official government data releases, economics oriented reporting, and picking apart emerging narratives in the media. While the general research staff provides support, the Economic Researcher is responsible for having a deeper understanding and greater awareness of current and emerging economic issues.

  • Monitoring: The Economic Researcher is responsible for reviewing business and economic programming/reporting outside the typical monitoring profile of the general research staff. This includes Fox Business, CNBC as well as certain print and online media outlets.

  • General Staff Support: Because the position requires a deep understanding of economic issues and how to present them to reach a wider audience, the Economic Researcher provides support to the general research staff on content related to the economy. Duties include assisting researchers regarding the nuances of particular economic misinformation.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years conducting research or analysis pertaining to public policy issues.

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in economics or related social science field.

  • Deep understanding of economic data, including government and private data releases. Familiarity with statistical methods commonly used in economic research strongly preferred.

  • Deep understanding of the role of the media in spreading misinformation about the economy.

  • Experience working on multiple tasks under tight deadlines. Preferred experience in producing deadline oriented web content.
