Media Matters for America -- a progressive, Washington, D.C-based, nonprofit research and information center is dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. Media Matters seeks an Education Program Director to lead a program dedicated to monitoring and analyzing media coverage of education policy and related issues.

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring and Research: The Education Program's content is developed through overall media monitoring done by Media Matters' Research Department, in addition to the Education Program Director's targeted tracking of education coverage in print, TV, and web media. The Education Program Director reviews prospective education content flagged by Media Matters' researchers and weighs in as necessary on other prospective content related to strategic program goals.

  • Content Production/Editing: The Education Program Director authors, edits, and supervises rapid response content, as well as longer-term projects providing quantitative analysis of the media's coverage of education issues. Successfully leading internal collaboration on education content is also expected of the Director, who must be available as a resource to other Media Matters teams, both general and issue-specific. The Director is responsible for ensuring Media Matters' ongoing efforts to correct conservative misinformation in the media regarding education are consistently addressed and communicated.

  • Outreach/External Affairs: In addition to assisting the Outreach team's ongoing work, the Education Program Director must initiate and conduct independent and collaborative outreach with education allies. This outreach is essential to the success of the Education Program and will be a large part of this role. This may involve a minimal amount of travel to affiliate- and partner-organized events and conferences.

  • General Administration: The Education Program Director assists in development work, including drafting grant proposals and updates, and successfully presenting the value of Media Matters' education work to prospective and current donors. The Education Program Director is also expected to be available for relevant senior management consultation and assignments.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in research, writing, or communications.

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably with a focus in Education, Political Science, or related disciplines.

  • Proven analytical writing, editing, and communication skills necessary.

  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of current political and policy issues, participants, institutions, and organizations relating to education, and an understanding of the problem of conservative misinformation in the media.

  • Established relationship with progressive allies preferred but not required, with the ability to grow Media Matters' outreach in this area.

  • Creative self-starter and team player with a demonstrated penchant for taking initiative.

  • Ability to plan and manage long-term projects under a deadline.

  • Ability to quickly research and write grammatical, accurate, and compelling stories.

  • Experience pitching ideas for online or print content preferred but not required.

  • Management experience preferred but not required.

  • Technology

    • Computer-savvy individual who is able to pick up new technology quickly.

    • Proficient with Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Excel, and Word.

    • Experience creating charts, videos, and graphics is helpful but not required.
