[jobsthatareLEFT] Reproductive Health Program Director, Media Matters for America (Washington, DC)

Media Matters for America is a progressive, Washington, D.C-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. The Media Matters Reproductive Health team provides original research and analysis concerning conservative media misinformation about women's reproductive health and rights as it relates to policy, legal, and cultural developments at the local, state, and federal levels of government. The Program Director will oversee the functioning of the Reproductive Health team while simultaneously assisting in the development of Media Matters' overall work in this issue area.

Responsibilities:

  • Content Generation: The Reproductive Health Program Director is responsible for supervising and producing quick response blogs and research items debunking emerging and recurring conservative misinformation in the media, in addition to reinforcing progressive messaging on women's reproductive health and rights. As part of the program's established strategic goals, the position also requires designing and implementing long-term quantitative projects that analyze media coverage of abortion-related issues. Content generation is done with the assistance of the Reproductive Health Researcher and the collaboration of other departments in the Research Department.

  • Management: The Reproductive Health Program Director guides overall content generated by Media Matters that addresses women's reproductive health and rights, and directly oversees the work of the Reproductive Health Researcher. The Reproductive Health Program Director is responsible for maintaining and completing strategic goals already in place for the Reproductive Health project, while ensuring the overall content has the maximum effect on correcting and shifting misleading policy, legal and cultural media narratives in this field.

  • Outreach: The Reproductive Health Program Director is responsible for fostering relationships with allied groups that work on behalf of progressive approaches to women's reproductive health and rights and the defense of constitutional protections for contraception and abortion. Outreach efforts are used to not only shape the framing and design of long and short term projects and advocacy, but also to amplify Media Matters' Reproductive Health content to a wider audience, including persuadables. Outreach is done with assistance from Media Matters' outreach and communications teams.

  • Research: The Reproductive Health Program Director is responsible for identifying and preparing for emerging and recurring stories and media narratives about women's reproductive health and rights. This includes keeping up to date with anti-choice legislation at both the state and federal levels, legal attacks on law and precedent that protect reproductive rights, and the contours of advocacy groups relevant to the Reproductive Health project. While the general research staff provides support, the Reproductive Health Program Director is responsible for having a deeper understanding and greater awareness of past and current issues that affect women's reproductive health and rights.

  • General Staff Support: Because the position requires a deep understanding of issues relating to women's reproductive health and rights and how to present them to reach a wider audience, the Reproductive Health Program Director provides support to the general research staff if and when they produce content that relates to this program area. Duties include instructing researchers about the nuances of particular misinformation on these issues and providing editing support when necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years conducting research, analysis, and advocacy pertaining to women's reproductive health and rights, preferably in a supervisory role.

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, or social science field related to women's reproductive health and rights. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Deep understanding of the current and projected policy, legal, advocacy, and cultural landscape affecting the Reproductive Health project.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing long-term quantitative projects either individually or in a team environment.

  • Deep understanding of the role of the media and anti-abortion groups in spreading misinformation about women's reproductive health and rights and its cultural effect.

  • Experience working on multiple tasks under tight deadlines. Preferred experience in producing deadline oriented web content and/or issue-related social media.
