The Writer is responsible for researching, writing, repurposing, and editing a vast array of material to help Alley Cat Allies continue its work transforming communities to protect and improve cats' lives. These materials include but are not limited to: email communications, printed education and advocacy tools, blog posts, news articles, web content, and marketing copy. This position serves as a resource to the entire organization on language and messaging. The writer works on team-oriented projects and campaigns to articulate Alley Cat Allies' message, as well as completing independent projects to inform and develop messaging.
This position is required to be in-house in our Bethesda, Maryland office.
Job Responsibilities
Writing:
- Articles and campaign content for website
- Educational content
- Action Alerts and other email communications
- E-news and quarterly newsletter articles
- Blog posts and articles on behalf of leadership
- Bylined news stories, magazine articles, letters to the editor
- Strategic storytelling in support of Alley Cat Allies' mission
Research:
- Stay informed of latest trends and developments in the field
- Review and report on latest scientific and popular literature regarding cats
- Serve as a resource to the organization on feral cat health and other issues
- Interview experts for publications
Editing:
- Fact checking for all organizational publications
- Editing and re-writing or proofreading for all departments as needed
- Serve as messaging and content resource for Development projects
- Maintain and enforce style guide
Partners (position collaborates with)
- Reports to and receives assignments from Editorial Manager and Director of Digital Media
- Provides content and editorial support for all departments including Campaigns; Development; Programs; Research, Law and Policy; Administration; Executive Leadership.
- Works closely with Leadership on drafts and content approval
- Works closely with Director of Digital Media on workflow and content of email communications
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree required
- 2 years of related experience or the equivalent
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to meet tight deadlines
- Excellent attention to detail and follow through
- Excellent organizational and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities and projects
- Familiarity with learning and adhering to multiple style guides depending on audience
- Ability to work both independently and as a team player
- Familiarity with new media – i.e. blogs, social networks – and an understanding of when and how to incorporate these into communications campaigns
- Experience conducting telephone interviews
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to take initiative
- Highly proficient computer skills with demonstrated knowledge and practical application of Word, Excel and other software programs as indicated
- Knowledge of community cat or animal issues a plus
Essential Functions

- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely via telephone and in person
