The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is looking for an intern with a passion for global political systems and technology to join the NDItech team as a Project Assistant. This is a paid internship available from April until the end of August, with the possibility of continuation during the academic year.
 
NDItech works around the globe with political experts in NDI's 60+ field offices to design and support technology-enabled programs giving citizens more voice in their governments and aiding governments in being more responsive to their people. The NDItech team works to improve democratic institutions like political parties, civil society organizations, and legislatures by applying locally-appropriate technology to increase transparency, open new channels of dialogue, and empower activist organizing and advocacy.
 
Interns/Project Assistants at NDI are given substantive responsibilities and are expected to be professional contributors to the wide-ranging efforts of this small team. Interns/Project Assistants need to be disciplined self-starters who can accept assignments and run with them, occasionally under pressure; they also need to know when to seek guidance before proceeding. Interns/Project Assistants are encouraged to attend workshops, lectures and other staff development events at NDI and across DC.
 
Primary Responsibilities
 
•    Investigate new technologies relevant to civil society, document their use and identify applications relevant for NDI programs;
•    Assist in field project design, implementation, testing, documentation and evaluation;
•    Assist with research requests, including technology profiles of targeted countries;
•    Coordinate logistics, organization and filming of NDI's Tech4Dem speaker series;
•    Coordinate logistics and invitations for public events and engage in community networking;
•    Attend external events as a NDItech representative; take notes and report;
•    Monitor technology media, including Twitter, and prepare summary clips;
•    Keep up with and report on best practices in technology and democracy;
•    Write easy-to-understand instructions and manuals for technology tools;
•    Coordinate the team's internal communications;
•    Actively contribute to the NDItech blog (https://demworks.org);
•    Actively contribute to the @NDItech Twitter and Tech4Dem Facebook accounts;
•    Coordinate administrative tasks such as travel authorizations and reconciliations.
 
Required Skills: 
 
•    Bachelor's Degree required with coursework in political science, international studies and/or computer science;
•    Passion for learning about new technologies demonstrated through experience experimenting with new tools or software
•    Experience with web and database technologies; Drupal and/or Salesforce experience a plus;
•    Experience with graphic design or data visualization tools a plus;
•    Experience with software development or testing a plus;
•    Experience in planning events;
•    Excellent organizational skills;
•    Demonstrated problem solving skills;
•    Excellent writing and speaking skills in both formal (donor reports) and informal (blogging, social media) styles;
•    Commitment to identified best practices that work toward sustainability using technology in the international development sector;
•    Ability to prioritize between multiple projects and complete them in a timely fashion - and follow up with supervisor on conflicting deadlines and priorities;
•    Effective team player, ability to manage requests from multiple individuals;
•    Political, campaign, legislative, organization or NGO experience highly desired;
•    Fluency in a language other than English and/or time living overseas highly desired;
•    Background in programming or systems administration a plus but not required.
•    Candidates who are able to work 30+ hours a week will be considered favorably.
