Position Purpose:
Work within public affairs of MDP is about facilitating successful communications internally and externally. Internally, it is focused on clear, concise, and engaging message development to our democratic activists, central committee officials, board, and partners. Externally, it is working to be the leading voice and advocate in fighting for our values and electing Democrats from the courthouse to the White House. That includes holding Republicans accountable when they take actions that stack the deck against working Montanans.
Required Skills, Abilities, and Experience:
§ Strong writing and verbal communication, editing, and proofreading skills
§ Background in all three disciplines of public affairs work – media relations, product management, and campaign communications
§ Ability to frame issues for difference audiences
§ Two years of experience in campaign communications, media relations, product management, and marketing
§ Two years of experience in campaign communications with elected officials
§ Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight, established deadlines
§ Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and video editing software
§ Experience supervising staff
§ Experience negotiating with vendors
§ Ability to work as a team and independently
Duties and Responsibilities:
§ Manage all communication requests, rapid response communication, and digital media content, including: press releases, op-eds, public statements, media advisories, and speeches
§ Assist in planning and implementing communications strategies to support campaigns by producing fact sheets, talking points, op-eds, and other materials as needed
§ Develop public relations campaign strategies for legislative and statewide candidates
§ Write and edit communications, direct mail, and content for website and social media
§ Develop and cultivate media relationships with both state and national reporters
§ Assist on other communication projects as needed, including training of surrogates
§ Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including weekends and evenings, with some travel, as needed
Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Communications Director will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with staff, consultants, elected officials, and other stakeholders.
