--Position Listing: http://www.Location: Chicago, ILservicenation.org/careers# Chicago
Position Description: ServiceNation, in partnership with Starbucks and others, is aggressively focused on opportunity youth – the six million 16-24 year olds neither in school or working – and getting them on a path to a job through a term of national service. This isn't just the right thing to do, but the smart thing to do. Our country and our economy needs young people ready for their futures.
A term of national service in organizations like YouthBuild, The Corps Network, City Year, and others is a powerful way to empower opportunity youth – providing them a pathway to serve their community, gain skills, and land a job. However, too few of them know about these opportunities, too few opportunities exist, very real barriers exist that prevent them from doing a year of service, and not enough employers understand the value of hiring from this talent pipeline when they do. The work in Chicago will focus on dramatically changing all of these realities.
Over the last eight years, ServiceNation has deployed a variety of grassroots and coalition-building efforts – from large-scale national campaigns to state-based work — to achieve major impact. Recognizing the power of national service to empower opportunity youth, we are applying our proven grassroots and coalition work to the pressing need to help young people neither in school or work.
This is a newly created position in one pilot city that will work with lots of community partners, businesses, city officials, and young people. As such, there is not a precise list of day-to-day activities. But the goals are as simple as they are ambitious:Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
- Connect opportunity youth in Chicago to existing national service positions
- Expand the number of national service positions in Chicago so more opportunity youth can join
- Gain a deep understanding of the barriers for opportunity youth in Chicago to choose a year of service
- Ensure they have a job by the end of their service term
Requirements:
- Working with relevant partners such as nonprofits, high schools, and community groups to connect young people to existing national service positions
- Building partnerships with employers
- Working with city officials and the private sector to expand national service opportunities
- Helping to build and lead a larger coalition of partners
- Educating employers about the opportunity youth talent pipeline to increase hiring rates
- Building a strategic plan for this work in Chicago and a detailed work plan
- Supporting communications, PR, and media outreach
- Working within a broader opportunity youth coalition, led by Starbucks and other partners
- Leading a "learning community" – you will not only be developing and implementing strategies, but also reporting back to the coalition on what's working and what's not when it comes to opportunity youth and national service.
To apply: send an email to jobs@servicenation.org with your cover letter and resume attached with the subject line: "Last Name – Chicago Director"
