LGBT Program Director
Media Matters for America is a progressive, Washington, D.C-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. The LGBT program team provides original research and analysis concerning conservative media misinformation about LGBT equality as it relates to policy, legal, and cultural developments at the local, state, and federal levels of government. The Program Director will oversee the functioning of the LGBT program and assist in the development of Media Matters' overall work in this issue area.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Content Generation: The LGBT Program Director is responsible for supervising, editing, and producing quick response blogs and research documents debunking emerging and recurring conservative misinformation in the media, in addition to reinforcing progressive messaging on the fight for LGBT equality. As part of the program's established strategic goals, the position also requires designing and implementing long-term quantitative projects that analyze media coverage of LGBT-related issues. Content generation is performed with the assistance of the LGBT Researcher and the collaboration of other members of the Research Department. The Program Director is responsible for ensuring Media Matters' ongoing efforts to correct conservative misinformation in the media regarding LGBT issues are consistently addressed and communicated.
Monitoring and Research: The LGBT Program's content is developed through overall media monitoring done by Media Matters' Research Department, in addition to the LGBT Program Director's and LGBT Researcher's targeted tracking of LGBT coverage in print, TV, and web media. The LGBT Program Director reviews prospective LGBT content flagged by Media Matters researchers and weighs in as necessary on other prospective content related to strategic program goals.
Management: The LGBT Program Director guides overall content generated by Media Matters that addresses the LGBT community, and directly oversees the work of the LGBT Researcher. The LGBT Program Director is responsible for maintaining and completing strategic goals already in place for the Program, while ensuring the overall content has the maximum impact in correcting and shifting misleading policy, legal and cultural media narratives.
Outreach: The LGBT Program Director is responsible for fostering relationships with allied groups that work on behalf of LGBT equality. Outreach efforts are used to not only shape the framing and design of long and short term projects and advocacy, but also to amplify Media Matters' LGBT content to a wider audience, including persuadables. Outreach is done with assistance from Media Matters' outreach and communications teams.
General Administration: The LGBT Program Director assists in development work, including drafting grant proposals and updates, and successfully presenting the value of Media Matters' LGBT work to prospective and current donors. The LGBT Program Director is also expected to be available for relevant senior management consultation and assignments.
General Staff Support: Because the position requires a deep understanding of issues relating to the LGBT community and how to present them to reach a wider audience, the LGBT Program Director provides support to the general research staff if and when they produce content that relates to this program area. Duties include instructing researchers about the nuances of particular misinformation on these issues and providing editing support when necessary.
