Press Assistant
Media Matters for America - a progressive, Washington, D.C-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media -- seeks a Press Assistant for the Communications Department to support the organization's media-outreach efforts. This position reports to the National Press Secretary.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Press Assistant will have the the following core responsibilities:
Assist Press Secretary - The Press Assistant's primary job is to assist the Press Secretary in the execution of his/her responsibilities. This could range from responding to reporter requests to conducting research to compiling press clips, and assisting with booking Media Matters talent on radio and television.
Maintain Media Contact Lists - The Press Assistant will maintain database of reporter distribution lists, update contact info as needed and identify reporters to add to existing lists. The Press Assistant will also general new lists in order to advance organizational goals.
Draft Press Materials - The Press Assistant will draft email blasts to reporters, press releases, statements, op-eds and background memos.
Strategic Planning - The Press Assistant will participate in the Communications Department's strategic planning. Accordingly, the Press Assistant is expected to contribute to strategic planning and will share in the accountability of the department's goal setting and attainment of results.
Reporter Outreach: The Press Assistant may be called upon to build and maintain relationships with print reporters at the state and national level in order to promote the organization's work or objectives. This includes sending pitch emails, placing stories, making pitch phone calls, and assisting in the drafting and distribution of press releases and Op-eds.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's Degree in communications, political science or a closely related field OR equivalent work experience is required.
At least 1-3 years of communications, media-relations, or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
Strong, demonstrated interest in media, progressive politics, and a commitment to the mission of the organization.
Familiarity with the media landscape and the way information moves through it.
Strong written and oral communications skills required, including:
Ability to work under tight deadlines.
Multitasking and the ability to work on long-term projects while simultaneously handling incoming media requests and rapid response requests
Ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and works well in a collaborative team setting.
