[jobsthatareLEFT] Frontier Group, Policy Analyst , Santa Barbara, CA

Frontier Group uses the power of ideas and information to achieve a cleaner environment and a fairer and more democratic society. We are issue experts, writers and analysts who recognize that having the facts on your side is important but isn't enough to change the world – it also takes effective communication, organizing and advocacy to get real results.

Frontier Group staff write and oversee the production of timely, high-quality reports on the nation's most important challenges. We help shape effective public policy strategies that address those problems. And we work to make sure the public and decision-makers hear our message through the media.

To maximize our impact, we partner with groups in the Public Interest Network – the nation's premier network of public interest organizations – and other organizations to insert our research and ideas into public policy debates at the local, state and federal levels. Frontier Group's mission also includes the development of social change theory, with the goal of improving understanding of the mechanisms by which citizens affect public policy in a democratic society.

Job Description

Frontier Group policy analysts conceptualize and write compelling reports on social problems and their solutions, participate in the development of effective public policies, and disseminate our ideas and findings to decision-makers and the public.

Frontier Group policy analysts can expect to work on many issues, and develop expertise in a few. Policy analysts can also expect to employ both qualitative and quantitative approaches to evaluating social problems and their solutions.

Policy analysts work with our partners in the Public Interest Network, a family of organizations including U.S. PIRG, Environment America and their state affiliates, to develop and hone effective public policies and to disseminate our work. Policy analysts write op-eds, blog entries and journal articles that insert our ideas and findings into the public debate, and participate in recruitment and fundraising efforts to build the strength of the organization and the public interest movement overall.

Specifically, the policy analyst will:

·      Review and draw conclusions from research in environmental science, public health, economics, and other fields.

·      Conduct quantitative analysis of data sets and sometimes collect original data through interviews, surveys and collaboration with academic researchers.

·      Evaluate policy alternatives and work with advocates and experts to develop effective policy proposals.

·      Write clear, concise and evocative reports.

·      Produce op-eds, blog entries, journal articles, interactive tools and other communications to share our ideas and findings with our audiences.

·      Participate in "rapid response" to unfolding events in our areas of interest.

·      Build relationships with experts and the media through personal communications, attendance at conferences, and engagement through social media.

·      Take part in policy and program development with the Public Interest Network.

·      Assist in the Public Interest Network's organization-building activities including recruitment, fundraising, and staff training.

Qualifications

We are looking for an individual with the drive, creativity and skills to take complex data and distill it into powerful conclusions that are easy to communicate to decision-makers and the public. Successful candidates will be adept at communicating through clear writing and graphics. The ideal candidate would have experience and facility with designing analytical approaches, applying core statistical concepts and translating scientific information for a lay audience. Experience with modeling, geospatial analysis, database design, and/or the development of on-line and mobile database tools will be considered a strong plus.

Candidates must have at least three years of experience in public interest advocacy, journalism, or policy analysis and development, OR an advanced degree in a relevant field plus some experience in public interest advocacy, journalism, or policy analysis and development. We evaluate candidates based on their writing ability, experience in political or public interest work, academic record, and reasoning and research skills. We especially look for candidates who are "quick studies," function well under deadlines, and have demonstrated both leadership and the ability to work well as part of a larger team to achieve positive change.

Compensation

Compensation for this position is commensurate with the relevant professional experience and/or advanced degrees that a candidate has.  Frontier Group offers a competitive benefits package.
