Position Location: Flexible; San Francisco/Bay Area, Detroit, Phoenix, New York City, or Washington, DC preferred  

Position Summary
The Director serves on the Leadership Development and Design (LDD) team and works to design and deliver high-impact programs to advance our members' skills and knowledge of public leadership, including politics, policy, advocacy and organizing.  The Director is responsible for overseeing a set of programs to inspire, develop and increase the number of LEE members successfully pursuing and serving in public leadership roles with a particular emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion.  The Director will lead program design and expansion efforts, program evaluation, outreach and recruitment, selection, and tracking of members.  They will also design, oversee and evaluate new programming for members.  They must consistently design and provide high-quality leadership development programs that are challenging, relevant, and tailored to our members, as well as ensure we can successfully track, measure and understand the impact of our leadership development programs on our members.  

The Director ensures that all LEE members participating in our leadership development programs are supported, inspired, and empowered to seek and pursue leadership opportunities at all levels that will help to achieve educational equity and excellence for all children.  This position reports to the Senior Director of Diversity and Equity Leadership Development.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee LEE's Diversity in Elected Leadership Series (DIELS), which provides targeted opportunities for members who are currently underrepresented in political leadership to learn more about running for and serving in elected office.  Specific responsibilities will include:
    • Developing and leading the overall strategy and planning for the DIELS, including which programs we'll offer in the series and opportunities for expansion
    • Overseeing outreach and recruitment to ensure we consistently reach our goals, in partnership with LDD teammates and other LEE and Teach For America staff
    • Overseeing the application and selection process for individual DIELS programs and managing a subset of programs in the series
    • Designing and/or customizing curriculum for members from different communities represented in the series
    • Recruiting and preparing highly qualified trainers to lead sessions and ensuring the diversity and effectiveness of the training team
    • Tracking individual program participants' progress and engagement and ensuring we have data on 100% of participants post program
    • Providing individualized coaching and follow-up support to participants, in coordination with other teams at LEE 
    • Evaluating the effectiveness of the series, including post-program engagement and conversion rates among members, and continually making improvements and identifying opportunities for expansion
  • Design and lead a new program based on the Diversity in Elected Leadership Series targeting diverse members interested in opportunities to explore their identity and public leadership roles (e.g., Diversity in Public Leadership)
  • Develop ideas for and lead the design of other new trainings, fellowships and other leadership development programs focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion in public leadership, informed by data and feedback from our LEE members and regional and national staff
  • Ensure the incorporation of a diversity, equity and inclusion lens in all of our programming, including designing curriculum and programming experiences to support members in developing their critical consciousness around oppression and its impact on educational inequity
  • Regularly serve as a trainer for LEE's programs


Requirements, Skills, Knowledge, Abilities & Competencies

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • At least 7 years professional experience required, including at least two years managing leadership programs
  • Experience developing curriculum and designing experiential trainings on topics related to public leadership for adult learners
  • Public leadership experience required (within politics, policy, advocacy or organizing)
  • Strong training and facilitation skills, including a thorough understanding of adult learning principles and effective training methodologies, especially from a diversity, equity and inclusion lens
  • Experience coaching leaders and playing a role in their long-term leadership development
  • Proven ability to build and leverage relationships with diverse audiences and partners
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Demonstrated ability to plan strategically, prioritize time, and manage implementation of plans in fast-moving, changeable environments
  • Flexible schedule, including willingness to travel approximately 30% of the time and ability to work evening and weekend hours, as needed
