Job Scope:           

The Connecticut Field Director plays a vital role in the growth of the Working Families Organization as a powerful independent political organization that advances progressive values and elects progressive champions in Connecticut.  We believe an effective grassroots voter contact operation is at the core of our campaigns and strategies for building power, strengthening our brand and advancing our mission.  In order to achieve our mission we build exceptional, self-sufficient field operations in each state where Working Families operates.

Providing meaningful support to candidates and organizations who share our values is central to this role.  The CT Field Director develops relationships and partnerships with a range of member organizations and allies, provides political targeting and research, and develops issue and electoral campaign plans to advance grassroots lobbying and election campaigns.

In addition to building coalitions with partner organizations and managing the field operation, CT Field Director's primary responsibility is to develop the next generation of Organizers, Field Managers, and Project Directors for the organization, our allies and movement. The CT Field Director is above all else a leader and a role model for the dozens of young activists who walk through our door every year. The person who fills this position will be responsible for designing and leading trainings, briefings, and workshops to give the know-how and inspiration her or his team to take on positions either higher up within our organization or with other Progressive organizations, candidates, and beyond.

Summary of Essential Job Functions:

  • Work with local organizational affiliates and allies to develop strategic voter contact plans to win issue and election campaigns while growing the brand and capacity of our organization.
  • Represent the organization to clients, campaign partners, and allies to ensure coordination and collaboration with others while ensuring our unique organizational interests and assets are recognized.
  • Adjust the scope and capacity of the field program to grow and/or change to meet the changing and growing demands of campaigns and the organization as a whole; adjust training curriculum accordingly.
  • Is responsible for regular evaluations of all canvass staff and carrying out staffing decisions such as promotions, demotions, and terminations when necessary.
  • Provide supervision, training, leadership, and support for Field Managers and Field Representatives, including periodic training in the field as needed.
  • Canvass in the field 2-4 days per week to test turf, set standards, and train Field Representatives.
  • Enforce fundraising quota with all of staff while maintaining personal quota.
  • Develop canvass scripts, talking points, and responses for a range of different kinds of voter contact campaigns.
  • Track campaign metrics and be accountable to campaign and organizational goals.
  • Coordinate operational logistics of the canvass.
  • Recruit all new staff needed to meet campaign needs on schedule, with an emphasis on quality of new hires.
  • Assign responsibilities and tasks to Field Managers and work to promote their professional growth.
  • Nurture deep relationships with promising canvass leaders and act as a mentor to rising canvass leaders.
  • Prepare daily, weekly and campaign ending reports, for both internal and external consumption.

Requirements:

  • Excellent judgment, professionalism, and ability to work independently and take initiative;
  • Ability to lead, motivate and inspire a team;
  • Strong problem solving skills, including ability to respond quickly and effectively to unforeseen challenges;
  • Ability to develop voter contact programs with quantifiable goals and metrics and to measure progress towards goals and adjust plans to fit changing campaign needs and circumstances;
  • Ability to manage a campaign budget and maximize efficient use of limited resources;
  • Effective listening, probing, and assessment skills;
  • Strong planning and organizational skills;
  • Successful face to face fundraising experience;
  • Superior interpersonal and highly effective communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Google Drive, Google Mail, Salesforce)

Education/Experience:

  • High school degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least three years of previous political campaign/fundraising experience, including field/canvass management experience.

Compensation:

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
