Greenpeace is looking for a talented, driven individual to join our Grassroots Organizing Department in the role of National Activist Network Director.
The National Activist Network Director leads a team that provides grassroots power to win hard-hitting campaign victories; builds Greenpeace's national profile; identifies, activates, and trains a diverse constituency for Greenpeace in the US; and helps build the next generation of leaders and activists in the environmental movement.
Greenpeace has developed a nationwide network of remotely organized volunteer activists who play an instrumental role in our high-impact and fast-growing grassroots organizing program. The Network team identifies, develops and supports student and community leaders who commit to work on Greenpeace campaigns throughout the year.
The best candidate for this position will be an ambitious, creative thinker; a strategic campaigner planner, seasoned manager; an experienced organizer with both online and offline skills; a great listener, and someone willing to get his or her hands dirty to help with the day-to-day needs of the program.
The National Activist Network Director's duties and responsibilities include:
- Manage, mentor and work collaboratively with the National Activist Staff (team size 5-7 members) in their planning and development of remotely organized volunteer-driven campaigns; develop new areas of network program; set ambitious programmatic and campaign goals and ensure they are accomplished
- Consult and advise campaigners on organizing strategy; develop campaign plans and package campaigns with campaigners as needed; facilitate campaign planning with network team staff and activist volunteers; participate in and lead grassroots-related components of the annual campaign planning process
- Works with the Digital Engagement team in the creation and implementation of a comprehensive online strategy to mobilize volunteers
- Ensure a comprehensive 'volunteer pipeline' into the organization; co-own the supporter engagement journey
- Manage a vibrant and active digital organizing platform: 'Greenwire', with over 5,000 volunteers
- Work with staff to develop trainings for both the student and activist networks
- Constantly analyze the data generated by online work and use that knowledge to guide both strategy and implementation of online tactics
- Manage the Network team budgets, and secure supplemental funding for the program from foundations and major donors
- Keep current on best practices in online strategy and new technology opportunities for Greenpeace.
- Serve as a liaison between the grassroots network team and other departments
- Represent the Grassroots Director as needed
- Other duties as assigned
- Minimum five years of staff management and two to three years program management with proven track record for developing, growing, and winning campaigns
- Experience in setting vision and direction for team of staff and volunteers
- Significant experience as grassroots organizer and/or campaigner—especially experience working on a national scale and organizing remotely
- A minimum of 3-5 years of online campaigning/organizing experience – including email writing and list building, database management and segmentation, online to on the ground organizing
- A history of creating online strategies that result in major campaign victories
- Experience working with and managing student or other activist networks and experience training and developing the staff for such a program
- Preferred BA/BS degree
Skills:
- Proven track record of coaching staff to success
- Experience in online platforms and tools such as Convio, Wordpress, Facebook, Twitter, Google Analytics, etc
- Proven email and online writing and editing skills with a strong attention to detail
- Proven ability to manage projects and budgets with attention to detail from start to finish
- Management, leadership development and facilitation skills
- Can take and deliver effective feedback
- Patient, calm under pressure, honest communicator
- Relational / network-centric; belief and love of collaboration; and sees deep value in building partnerships and relationships, internally and externally
- Solutions oriented; creative approach to problem solving
- Demonstrated commitment to anti-oppression values, analysis and work.
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
- Commitment to non-violence as a means of affecting change
