Founded in 2014, UnifiEd is a community-led movement of parents, teachers, and friends of public schools, united around a shared goal: that every student in Chattanooga will have the opportunity to graduate prepared for a brilliant future. To create a better public education system, we need to be a better public. We believe that if citizens are informed about why education matters, what works in the classroom, and how anyone can help, then we can build better schools. Candidate Profile

UnifiEd is looking for an Executive Director responsible for the strategic planning and sustainable development of the organization. The Executive Director will work together with key staff members to lead and manage: policy change initiatives, messaging and communications, development and operations, staff training and leadership development, political strategy, and civic engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Political and Advocacy 

  • Lead political and organizational strategy development, with an understanding of the local political landscape; anticipate and respond to challenges and opportunities, and propose program and resource shifts to meet those challenges/opportunities
  • Develop and implement civic engagement and campaign plans
  • Create and adapt training curriculum, prepare trainers and lead training, facilitate leadership programs, and integrate training with larger organizational goals

Policy and Communications

  • Lead and manage the research and analysis required to produce policy memos and education reports on key education topics affecting Hamilton County and Tennessee
  • Produce talking points, briefings, research notes, and PowerPoint presentations for both internal and external audiences
  • Conduct various forms of research including phone and in-person interviews as well as statistical analysis of state and national education data
  • Represent the organization in meetings, coalitions, panels and at conferences
  • Analyze, synthesize, and summarize dense and complex information accurately, clearly, and within a short time-frame
  • Meet with key education stakeholders across Hamilton County to both gather input for research and then help ensure that research is put into practice
  • Produce and breakdown data and complex education policy for a broad audience
  • Supervise and support community research projects around education policy
  • Work with key staff and student organizers to develop and refine internal and external message platform – develop communication materials – which may include: fact sheets, opinion articles, letters to the editors, blog posts, press releases, etc. – that articulate consistent and effective messaging about local education policy

Development and Operations

  • Create and implement fundraising strategy, including large and small dollar donor development program as well as grant writing
  • Create marketing materials, and social media and advertising campaigns as part of a public relations strategy for fundraising
  • Oversee the financial status of the organization including developing long and short-range financial plans, monitoring the budget and ensuring sound financial controls are in place; set financial priorities accurately to ensure the organization is operating in a manner that supports the needs of the program and staff

Staff Management 

  • Manage staff – including supervision and evaluation, monitoring personnel policies, and creating a learning environment that supports staff in doing their best work
  • Organize staff development training programs and individual staff development plans to aggressively ramp up organizers strategic, coalition building, and organizing skill
  • Provide coaching, strategic guidance and critical feedback to staff and student organizers, with a practice of mentorship, respecting the skills, strengths, contributions, and challenges of individual team members

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Deep understanding of political landscape
  • Experience and proven effectiveness in developing advocacy campaigns and organizers
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude
  • Mission-driven and self-directed
