POSITION AVAILABLE: Executive Director – Position Located in Minnesota
REPORTS TO: Director of Organizational Development in the States
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Executive Director will lead efforts in all areas of the Minnesota state organization. These include fundraising, grassroots organizing, coalition building, research, policy analysis, communications, advocacy, litigation, and any other activities that promote the Common Cause agenda at the state and national level and foster a strong, sustainable organization in Minnesota.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Raise money from foundations, major donors, members, special events and devise other fundraising strategies to fund charitable as well as lobbying work.
- Lead strategic planning effort to ensure that Common Cause Minnesota can successfully fulfill its mission into the future.
- Communicate with the public and members across the state, through the media, social media, direct mail, and other channels.
- Coordinate state membership activities with current members as well as expand membership in the state by engaging new members from diverse constituencies to the organization.
- Develop and execute lobbying strategies to advance reform and hold federal, state and local elected officials and other decision-makers accountable.
- Produce timely, high quality policy research.
- Develop effective, winnable Minnesota policy reforms at all levels of government and advocate for their passage and implementation.
- Work with the Minnesota Advisory Board of Directors, schedule their meetings and engage them in the organization's work, including fundraising, outreach and policy strategies, and Board recruitment strategies.
- Oversee the fiscal integrity of Common Cause Minnesota, including the development of an annual budget in conjunction with the national office and input from the board of directors, periodic financial statements and other materials as may be requested and as may be needed to accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
- Recruit, train and supervise state staff, volunteers and interns.
- Serve as liaison to the national office and participate in national staff meetings, programs and activities as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Entrepreneurial spirit with a desire to build upon current assets to establish a larger state operation.
- Having previously founded an organization or business is a plus.
- Strong fundraising skills and experience, with a willingness to learn more about and cultivate Common Cause's network of major donors in Minnesota.
- Familiarity with Minnesota's political landscape and the state legislative process.
- Strong experience in non-profit advocacy and organizing work.
- Demonstrated leadership and organizing ability including board development.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Demonstrated experience working with the traditional and new media.
- Organizational management experience, including nonprofit organizations.
- 5 or more years' management experience preferred.
- Experience and passion for the Common Cause agenda and mission.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a deadline driven environment with competing priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities and to build alliance among diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff, including national staff and peers in other Common Cause state organizations.
- Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
- Willingness to travel and flexibility to occasionally work evenings and weekends.
- Working knowledge of social media tools including Facebook and Twitter; Able to adhere and protect Common Cause's nonpartisan values.
