Community Engagement Coordinator

 

DESCRIPTION

Parents have a unique and critical role in improving Clark County public schools. Public institutions tend to be only as effective as the public demands they be. In communities where parents are connected to each other and deeply engaged, public schools tend to be more effective.


A Las Vegas-based non-profit is looking for a community engagement coordinator to support its organizing efforts to build for volunteer-driven education reform throughout low-income communities in Clark County. The community engagement coordinator will help build a coalition of parents and community stakeholders who can successfully push for better schools and hold the system accountable to the needs of families and children.


This is a part-time, contract position that will last between 3 to 6 months, with the possibility of extension.


The Community Engagement Coordinator will:

  • Support the organization's efforts in identifying, training and developing community leaders in the principles and practices of community organizing in order to build powerful parent-driven school reform.
  • Work with the organizing team to build agendas, turnout strategies, and logistics around community meetings and events. 
  • Support the organization in managing relationships with leaders from multiple sectors, such as principals, teachers, charter schools leaders, elected officials and community leaders to support the reform agenda of local organizations.
  • Help develop a broad base of constituents in neighborhoods in support of the reform agenda of the parent organizations, including faith based institutions, neighborhood associations, local government agencies and social service agencies.
  • Help train and guide grassroots leaders and local parent organizations in relationship building, research, and policy development to build political power in Clark County.
  • Work with the organizing team to plan and coordinate large public forums and meetings, led by parent leaders.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Baccalaureate degree or equivalent work experience.
  • We are looking for candidates with one to three years of professional community organizing or community development experience.
  • Work experience in low-income communities.
  • Significant experience or expertise in the field of community organizing, grassroots leadership development, political advocacy.
  • Has an understanding of the education and education reform landscape.
  • Academic or experiential knowledge related to building social capital and political power in low-income communities and multilingual communities.
  • Skilled trainer with specialized knowledge in grassroots leadership development, political context, public policy development, or public education desired.
  • Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills required.
  • Experience in developing and supporting public policy solutions to local or regional problems.
  • Ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills and an ability to analyze policies and institutions.
  • Experienced with and sensitivity to multicultural work environments.
  • Willing to work as member of and contribute to a staff team in a dynamic, learning environment.
  • Previous organizing and/or social justice experience highly desirable.
  • Spoken Spanish language proficiency preferred.
