JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

PRESS SECRETARY/COMMUNICATIONS LEAD

 

The Reproaction Education Fund is a new direct action group forming to increase access to abortion and advance reproductive justice. We are proud of our left-flank analysis, and are already making waves for our willingness to take bold action. And, we're growing!

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

The press secretary carries the voice of Reproaction, from digital to media and everything in between. The primary pursuit of the press secretary will be to ensure Reproaction gets robust coverage in the press.The press secretary will also be responsible for growing Reproaction's visibility on social media and managing brand-level communications. This is a full-time position reporting to and working closely with one of the Reproaction co-directors. While Reproaction is an all-virtual organization, strong preference for this position will be given to candidates who live in or are willing to relocate to the metropolitan area of Washington, D.C.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

·      Responding to press inquiries, building relationships, and proactively pitching Reproaction to the press

·      Drafting OpEds and press releases, and other written materials as assigned

·      Pitching and placing OpEds for the co-directors on a regular basis

·      Assisting with editing and cultivating a consistent voice for Reproaction, including creating and sending monthly Reproaction Roundups to email supporters

·      Managing email calendar and working with organizers, campaign staff, and co-directors to ensure regular flow of content

·      Growing supporters on social media platforms, creating social content and graphics, and running social media accounts

·      Supporting online and offline actions, especially by running associated social media coverage and working to publicize actions within the press

·      Coordinating development and migration to a new/expanded website, including ongoing website maintenance

·      Supporting the development of merchandise that supports campaigns, rapid response actions, and branding objectives for the organization

·      Collaborating with Reproaction leadership and staff on strategy and tactics

·      Supervise and manage communications fellow, contingent on experience level of candidate and future organizational growth

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

·      Strong relationship skills, with a proven track record of pitching and placing earned media; experience with broadcast as well as print and digital media highly desirable

·      Excellent writing and editing skills, and a commitment to getting it right

·      Proficiency in the basic mechanisms of public policy and strong understanding of reproductive justice issues, or willingness to learn

·      Basic HTML skills and proficiency in social media, including an ability to design shareable graphics or a willingness to learn (video experience is not required, but highly desirable)

·      Experience with activism or campaigns, either in a paid capacity or as a volunteer

·      Initiative and ability to self-motivate in an all-virtual, start-up organization

·      Ability to work with urgency and under pressure while remaining calm, organized, and professional

·      Accountability, a commitment to professionalism and open communication, and receptiveness to performance-based direction

·      Adaptability and an entrepreneurial spirit; comfort with creativity and experimentation

·      College degree preferred, although education and professional experience flexible for the right candidate

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

·      Fierce and firm commitment to reproductive justice, including but not limited to abortion rights without exceptions

·      Ability to work without supervision in a home office or other self-chosen professional environment with Internet access and minimal background noise

·      Ability to work some evening and weekend hours as required by actions or events

·      Ability to travel on occasion

·      Strong interpersonal skills, especially the ability to work with diverse people and willingness to consider alternative points of view

 

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

 

This is a professional-level position (3-5 years relevant paid experience) that is best for someone who demands more and better for our movement, and is probably not your stepping stone into a position on Capitol Hill or within a mainstream reproductive rights organization. Salary package commensurate with experience and includes benefits, with opportunity for growth based on performance.
