[jobsthatareLEFT] Maryland & DC Policy Director, Chesapeake Climate Action Network (Takoma Park/DC)

A top state-based advocacy group for clean energy and progressive climate policies is seeking a new policy director for its Maryland and DC-based campaigns. It's a tremendous opportunity for an ambitious, talented, and experienced policy strategist with proven lobbying and managerial skills. Chance to live in Washington, DC while leading landmark regional campaigns free of federal intransigence.

As record-high temperatures persist and we're facing a national administration full of climate deniers, you may be asking yourself how you can join the fight to curb global warming. The answer: Work for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network! We've been winning state-level, precedent-setting victories for the past 15 years and we're looking for a strong campaigner to help us keep up the tradition. Our most recent victory is a statutory ban on fracking for gas in Maryland, with national implications. Activist Bill McKibben says, "CCAN is the best regional climate organization I've ever seen, anywhere in the world."

About Us

The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is the only group in the Chesapeake region of Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. dedicated exclusively to building a powerful grassroots movement to fight climate change. Our mission is to build the kind of movement it will take to put our region on the path to climate stability, while using our proximity to the nation's capital to inspire action in neighboring states, around the country, and around the world.

  • We like success. We take on the region's biggest polluters and push for ambitious, carbon-reducing policies and programs.

  • We are a creative, energetic team that challenges notions of what's "politically possible."

  • We constantly strive to do our best, learn from our successes and failures and win concrete victories. We ask ourselves if we're doing enough and if we've thought of everything.

About the MD and DC Policy Director

To be successful in this position, you will have the following qualities and experience:

  • You like success and understand what it takes to run strategic campaigns, challenge power-holders and convince people of your point of view.

  • You are both self-driven and work well in a team environment. You know what it takes to build coalitions and maintain critical relationships for short and long-term victories.

  • You have at least 5 years of experience running campaigns and lobbying, and working legislation at the national or state level.

  • You are an excellent communicator with strong writing and public speaking skills. You are good at managing group dynamics and are both persuasive and inclusive.

What you'll do

  • Policy and campaign development: Research and write policies that will continue to keep Maryland in the forefront of state-based solutions to climate change. Work with CCAN's field team in Maryland and DC to ensure our policy and field plans are aligned.
