Position Summary:
Health Access seeks a dedicated and energetic candidate to take a leadership role as the Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator for the California Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health & Human Services Network (CA LGBT HHS Network), a statewide coalition working to advance LGBT health. This position will specifically work on a project of the CA LGBT HHS Network to advance LGBTQ mental health equity through education, outreach, and advocacy, in addition to supporting the overall health equity goals of the CA LGBT HHS Network.
The Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator will be part of a team that is responsible for developing and implementing a statewide LGBTQ mental health policy agenda, engaging organizations across California in working towards those policy goals, and coordinating regular communication among CA LGBT HHS Network participants.
The Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator will be a skilled coalition organizer and policy advocate. Strong communication skills, work ethic, and passion for LGBTQ health and mental health are essential. Candidates must be able to work within a team, have proven leadership ability and experience handling a great deal of responsibility. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications.
The position is based in our Sacramento office with occasional travel to other parts of California, including overnight trips.
Specific responsibilities include:
Operations and Network Coordination
- Work with the CA LGBT HHS Network Director and Steering Committee to plan monthly conference calls and take minutes;
- Convene conversations between CA LGBT HHS Network participants to discuss recurring issues, share best practices, and develop policy solutions;
- Identify additional LGBTQ-serving organizations and reach out to potential new coalition partners; maintain the broad diversity of organizations participating in the CA LGBT HHS Network;
- With the CA LGBT HHS Network Director and project partners, compile project activities for quarterly and other reports for LGBTQ mental health contract; Assist with the coordination of Network-sponsored events.
Policy Advocacy
- Attend state agency meetings about topics that are relevant to LGBTQ health and mental health; present public comment representing the CA LGBT HHS Network's and the LGBTQ Stakeholder Project's positions and comments on various topics;
- Work with advocates to ensure the successful implementation of legislation and policies benefitting LGBTQ health, mental health and wellness;
- Work with Steering Committee members and Project Workgroup members to inform policy goals (at the state, county, and/or local levels) that will improve LGBTQ mental health in California;
- Research, design, and present advocacy trainings for coalition partners;
- Research LGBTQ mental health resources and draft educational materials related to LGBTQ mental health disparities and advocacy;
- Compose sign-on letters and comment templates that organizations can utilize in their advocacy.
Outreach and Communications
- Maintain the CA LGBT HHS Network and the LGBTQ Stakeholder Project website, keeping the information on legislation and broad policy work current, and providing links to fact sheets, sample letters from our partner organizations, and other resources;
- With the Network Director, develop and send regular email updates to the CA LGBT HHS Network and LGBTQ Stakeholder Project participants about trainings, webinars, policy developments, advocacy opportunities, and funding opportunities;
- Maintain Facebook and Twitter accounts for the CA LGBT HHS Network and the LGBTQ Stakeholder Project;
- Maintain a Network blog, which may include writing Network blog posts, soliciting guest posts, and maintaining the blog webpage.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- At least two years of experience in a leadership role in community and/or political organizing, communications, and/or policy advocacy; or equivalent relevant educational experience;
- Strong organizational skills, ability to stay focused with attention to detail while working on multiple projects;
- Skilled at electronic communications and social media (Facebook and Twitter); proficient with Microsoft Office; quick to learn new technologies;
- An independent thinker, self-motivated, problem solver, and team player, with a commitment to excellence;
- Familiarity with the complex health care and/or healthcare delivery issues in California, understands connections with mental and behavioural health;
- Passion for and commitment to addressing the issues, needs and interests of LGBTQ youth, adults, families and community, including knowledge of the spectrum of gender identity and transgender issues;
- Commitment to inclusive, multi-cultural programming; prior experience working within coalitions with diverse communities and an understanding of intersectional oppressions;
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of personalities;
- Must be able to meet deadlines, be responsive, and demonstrate excellent communication skills;
- Knowledge of mental health policy, state agencies and state legislative process, and/or non-profit advocacy is a plus.
- Skills designing flyers, PowerPoint slides, and/or social media graphics is a plus.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate, as multiple telephone conversations and normal office equipment continue throughout the day. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Salary: Salary ranges from $40,000 - $60,000 depending on experience.
