WHO WE ARE:
Progress Virginia is a multi-issue progressive advocacy organization that combines cutting edge online organizing and communications with rapid and hard-hitting earned media strategies. We provide a strong, credible voice for advancing progressive values and solutions to critical community problems. But we don't do that on our own—we work as a communications team for the entire progressive community in Virginia.
WHO YOU ARE:
Can you explain news events to our audience as they happen in a relatable, accurate, and interesting way? Do you have a strong social following and a knack for interacting with people on social media about progressive issues? Do you have 2-3 years of demonstrated experience covering politics and public policy (preferably in Virginia)? If so, we'd love to talk to you.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:

The candidate will work mostly independently, but will collaborate occasionally with staff on production of social media videos or other content as needed.

- A successful candidate will be a self-driven and highly motivated journalist who can easily unpack and report on daily breaking news and produce easy-to-understand backgrounders and explainers for the Virginia general public on select progressive issues that Progress Virginia supports.
- S/he/they must be willing to proactively scout for stories around our issue areas and quickly report on whatever happens each day.
- Support of progressive issues and a passion for sharing knowledge is critical, as is experience engaging with social networks on news and analysis.
- Direct newsroom experience isn't a requirement, but we do need you to have a strong (published) news writing portfolio and a demonstrated experience (2-3) years as a journalist or news writer.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Robust published portfolio of accurate, news-style writing around politics and public policy
- 2-3 years' experience as a journalist or news writer
- Familiarity with WordPress CMS (you'll be publishing your own stories)
- An active, engaged following on social media platforms
- Experience reporting on politics and public policy (Virginia preferable)
- Ability to physically report from Richmond, Virginia (you'll likely be covering some General Assembly hearings)
- Ability to produce short social media videos/interview is a plus
WHEN/WHERE:
- This is a three-month contract position starting on January 8, 2018.
- Though we operate a virtual office, you must be able to travel regularly to Richmond, Virginia and surrounding areas in order to cover news events.
WHAT ELSE YOU SHOULD KNOW:
- Progress Virginia is an equal opportunity employer. Women, people of color, persons with disabilities, veterans, and LGBTQ candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Progress Virginia operates a virtual office. Candidates should expect to work from home (in Virginia), and occasionally travel for events and meetings. The position is full-time.
