Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan leadership development organization dedicated to developing its members' potential to ensure every child has the opportunity to receive an outstanding education.

Position Summary
The Media Pitcher, Communications, will report to the Senior Director, Communications, and will pitch LEE member stories of impact to hyper-local media. Ideal placements will focus on the member with a subtle mention of LEE as it pertains to their leadership development and impact. Qualified candidates for this position will have proven experience pitching and securing local media, writing media pitches, crafting inspiring stories that pique media interest, interviewing/collecting stories, attention to detail/tracking, writing for a variety of audiences on both digital platforms and print. Education experience is a plus. Additionally, they will demonstrate cultural competency, with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout internal and external communications. This is a consultant position for 4-5 hours/week or 40-50 hours total from August-October 2018. Timing to be finalized with the consultant.
Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
- Develop local media lists and investigate media for positive partnerships
- Interview members, craft inspiring pitch angles/stories
- Pitch local media, track interactions and communicate publication dates
- Customize pitches as needed to secure placements; provide strategic recommendations as the project unfolds if needed
- Work experience in public relations, marketing, communications, media, journalism or similar field
- Proven experience pitching media and securing media placements
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Keen attention to detail
- Thorough understanding of media climate
- Knowledge of AP style
- Ability to set and consistently meet deadlines and commitments
- Cultural competency with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout internal and external communications
- Positive attitude with a team-minded mentality
- Comfortable working remotely and collaborating in a geographically dispersed organization
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in journalism or related field with a passion for storytelling and working with diverse and underrepresented communities
- Proficient in the tactical use of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube
- Understanding of education field
- Experience using media monitoring and list building services like Meltwater, etc
Benefits and Salary
Hourly rate is competitive and depends on prior experience. Benefits are not included.
