SEIU (Service Employees International Union)

Job Title: Education Coordinator Grade: PS-3 Annual Pay : $76,509.20/YR

Location: Washington, DC

Purpose of Position:

To represent and assist the International Union with implementing training and education programs in support of building more effective locals and winning campaigns.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the headquarters Together We Rise Department, the Education Coordinator will bear major responsibility for helping to design and implement education programs for Local Union and International Staff. These programs will include new member engagement increasing member leadership and support TWR movement building model, increase membership support for organizing and politics; helping locals implement new models of representation work.

The Education Coordinator will perform a wide range of duties and have many responsibilities including:

Educational Support:

  1. Assist with the development of curricula for TWR on topics including internal organizing, leadership development, planning and time management, facilitation, basic political economy, and other social justice issues.
  2. Conduct training sessions for local union staff, members and international staff on a wide range of topics related to TWR.
  3. Assist with the organization and dissemination of training curricula through on-line sites.
  4. Implement and maintain a system for tracking and evaluating all education programs.
  5. Assist with implementation of a program to develop and evaluate a cadre of experienced trainers.

Local Union Support:

  1. Provide support to local education/member strength directors.
  2. Assist the Director to Partner with divisions, other departments and locals to develop new curricula and/or adapt existing curricula to specific circumstances and needs.
  3. Represent SEIU to outside organizations on education and training matters.

Direction and Decision Making:

This position reports to, and works closely with, the Member Leadership and Action Education Director.

Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university; 2 years of organizing experience in a union, community organization or issue-driven organization; 2 years of experience in training. All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities.

Specialized Knowledge and Training

  • Knowledge and understanding of basic principles and skills involved in internal organizing, leadership development, campaign planning and implementation.
  • Strong facilitation skills.
  • Ability to lead teams and workgroups in creation of new materials.
  • Experience with on line and distance-learning tools and programs and methodologies.
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to manage relationships in complex political and organizational situations.
  • High level of individual motivation, ability to set and meet clear deadlines.

Physical Requirements

This position must be available for work both inside and office setting as well as work may be performed in in other settings. Frequent travel and long, irregular hours are required.
