Job Description

Title:                      Community Liaison

Hours:                   Part-Time, Hours Flexible

Compensation:  Salary or Hourly-Wage Commensurate with Experience



Desired Skills & Experience   

  •        1+ years working in an elected official's district office or social work field
  •        Spoken proficiency in Spanish, Cantonese and/or Mandarin preferred, and written Chinese and Spanish proficiency a plus.
  •         Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) a plus
  •        Excellent written and oral communication skills
  •         Familiarity with New York City issues and neighborhoods strongly preferred
  •         Knowledge of city agencies and social service organizations preferred
  •         Interest in local government and willingness to be flexible to work nights and weekends
  •         Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently

Summary of Position:

The Council Member represents a diverse district in New York City. The office is dedicated to many issues, including affordability, preservation, open space, resiliency, education equality, civil rights, and small business survival. The Community Liaison will work with city agencies and social service organizations to help resolve issues that constituents bring to the office either in-person or by phone. The liaison will attend local community meetings, including tenant meetings and Community Board meetings, and intergovernmental meetings on the Council Member's behalf. The liaison may represent the Council Member at public and interagency meetings. They will also have the opportunity to occasionally support on research and legislative projects.


Primary Job Responsibilities:

  •        Speak with constituents over the phone and via email to assess concerns and connect constituents with government resources and social service organization
  •         Attend Community Board, tenant, and other community meetings on the Council Member's behalf
  •         Occasionally support Legislative Director with policy projects
  •         Maintain relationships with local community leaders and report on ongoing community issues to the Council Member and other stakeholders


Additional Responsibilities:

  •         Will be available via Council mobile device for emergencies
  •         Assist with events hosted by the Council Member
  •         Work with legislative office to collect information on community issues for development of policy and to support public testimony by the Council Member
  •         Contribute to monthly newsletters and help draft greeting letters
  •         Occasionally translate proceedings at community meetings for constituents when translation is not provided, if candidate possesses additional language skills
  •         Supervise casework interns
