Position Summary:
The National Impact team is responsible for LEE's national platform supporting member impact across the country. The National Impact team is comprised of the following four national teams, each led by a Vice President:
- Elected Leadership (EL)
- Leadership Development and Design (LDD)
- Organizing Leadership (OL)
- Policy & Advocacy (PA)
The Chief of Staff, National Impact will report to the Senior Vice President (SVP) of National Impact and will serve as a primary partner across the National Impact (NI) team in building new capacities, identifying strategic opportunities to streamline processes and identifying data driven opportunities to evolve practices. They will sit on the National Impact leadership team (NILT), and in partnership with the NILT, develop the team's strategies, help manage the team's impact and performance, ensure there are strong internal operational systems, and work to build an inclusive and development-oriented culture. The Chief of Staff will design and continuously update/improve the strategic agenda in close alignment with the vision set by the Senior Vice President. A strategic, collaborative leader with a keen eye to tactical implementation, the Chief of Staff will align team leads with the SVP's long- and mid- term strategic priorities, build team understanding of the overall National Impact Team vision, and proactively identify opportunities to advance the overall LEE vision for impact. The Chief of Staff will work across LEE teams, enhancing alignment between the National Impact team and partner teams including the Regional Impact, Technology, Communications, and Strategy teams. They will also be responsible for special projects that build innovations across the organization.
The ideal candidate will have significant experience in strategy, analysis, project management and one of the four leadership pathways (advocacy, electoral, organizing or policy) in order to provide critical support and thought partnership to NI's SVP and to help advance the team's top priorities. They will have competencies in short- and long-term planning and support of the National Impact team's weekly meetings, development of reports, cross functional initiatives, partnerships, bi-annual team retreats and will have ownership over a variety of special projects to significantly increase the impact of the organization. Additionally, the Chief of Staff will be a strong problem solver with exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal) who can build relationships with a diverse set of individuals and organizations. As a high visibility leader at LEE, the Chief of Staff will have a deep personal and professional alignment with LEE's core values.
Position Location: Flexible; Washington, DC preferred
Travel Requirements: minimum 50% travel
Responsibilities:
- Lead annual planning (as part of LEE org wide planning) and quarterly impact review (QIR) process for the four National Impact teams (EL, PA, OL and LDD)
- Lead team budgeting/forecasting for all four national teams, ensuring budget discipline for all teams
- Lead National Impact team's culture building, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and team building efforts
- Support all four of the National Impact Vice Presidents in recruitment and hiring of staff as well as support with staff development, such as Performance Improvement Plans, onboarding, Visions of Excellence and the annual performance evaluation process. This includes supporting staff transitions by providing temporary leadership, as interim VP, of a national team (as needed) during times of transition.
- Regularly assess data on the National Impact team's health and performance and advise on adjustment to strategy
- Manage the coordinator who is responsible for supporting the team culture as part of One LEE culture, including team retreat planning for all four national teams and creating consistent messaging/culture/expectations for all national teams
- Lead special projects as they arise and act as a "jack of all trades" in support of the Senior Vice President, National Impact
- Support the SVP, National Impact with fundraising and supporter relations (e.g., write proposals, identify opportunities, cultivation of supporters)
Minimum Qualifications:
- 9 years of relevant professional work experience; including in advocacy, electoral, organizing or policy development
- Bachelors required; Master's in relevant field or JD preferred
- 5+ years of demonstrated experience managing teams to meet and exceed goals; leading and managing a geographically dispersed and/or start-up team a plus
- Proven track record of effectively interacting with senior management
- Impeccable managerial and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across departments
- Effective, versatile and action-oriented
- Strategic thinker, data-driven and analytical in approach to solving problems
- Excellent communication skills; strong written and verbal communication; listens well and can easily learn to communicate in someone else's "written voice"
- Excels at building relationships and networks; influences others to achieve outcomes
- Systems and process-thinker; loves creating order out of chaos
- Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion
- Deep passion for educational equity and belief in LEE's mission and theory of change
