New York State Senator Brad Hoylman (Democrat/Working Families) has an immediate opening for a Legislative Aide and Community Liaison based in his Manhattan District Office.
-- As a member of New York's new Democratic majority in the State Senate and the Chairman of the New York State Senate's Judiciary Committee, Senator Hoylman is a progressive leader in state politics. He is also the only openly gay legislator in the State Senate. This year, the Senate passed several of his major pieces of legislation, including bills enabling Congress to request President Trump's New York State taxes, banning LGBTQ conversion therapy, adding protections for transgender New Yorkers into state law, ending non-medical exemptions for vaccination, and lifting the statute of limitations for survivors of child sexual abuse to hold their abusers accountable. Senator Hoylman is also the lead sponsor of bills to keep ICE out of courtrooms, institute a tax on second homes owned by the ultra-rich, reform New York's parole system, modernize New York's surrogacy laws, and much more. There's a lot more work to do, and we need your help to make it happen.
Applicants should have strong writing skills, interpersonal/communications skills, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and a sense of humor. Since attendance at community meetings is part of the job, applicants should also be comfortable with frequent weeknight and, much less frequently, weekend work.
The Legislative Aide and Community Liaison will be expected to:
- Serve as a liaison to community groups and constituents in the Senator's district and advise the Senator on responses to local issues
- Attend Community Board and other district meetings, hearings, press conferences, public forum discussions, etc., and serve as the Senator's representative at such events
- Take calls and field inquiries from constituents who are having issues in the district, and follow up with the relevant agencies as the Senator's representative. You will serve as an advocate and caseworker for many New Yorkers who are having problems with housing, education, and other issues.
- Write talking points and background briefings for the Senator
- Conduct research and compile information on legislative and community issues
- Remain current on the Senator's legislative and policy agenda, and serve as a resource regarding those issues for the local community and colleagues
- Identify specific community needs and organize related public events for the Senator
- Stay up to date on local news
Employees receive the full range of New York State benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, a pension plan, paid holidays and sick days.
