Title: Community Violence Initiative State Manager (full-time, exempt)
Organization: Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence
Reports to: State Legislative Director
Location: Washington, DC or San Francisco, CA
The Community Violence Initiative State Manager will manage efforts in achieving progress toward Giffords' state priorities related to promoting evidence-based community violence reduction strategies in target states and increasing the amount of state investment for these programs. This role will serve as a liaison to elected officials, key stakeholders, and staff at the state level.
Position requires ability and willingness to travel up to 25% and interest in staffing occasional weekend and evening events.
Duties + Responsibilities:
- Execute work plans for advancing Giffords' community violence intervention and prevention priorities in multiple states
- Support relationships with lawmakers and their staff, stakeholders, and advocates through frequent communication and by providing guidance and resources on gun violence intervention and prevention strategies
- Monitor and report on legislative developments, typically including the budget process, on an ongoing basis
- Work with the community violence initiative director and the state legislative team to develop resources and materials in support of Giffords' community violence state legislative agenda
- Collaborate with colleagues to draft policy content for social media and press releases, or as needed
- Represent Giffords to state allies and partners to strengthen relationships, communicate Giffords' goals, and provide education and resources regarding community violence initiative
- Other duties as assigned
Essential Skills + Experience:
- One to three years' experience working with legislation or lobbying and advocacy at local, state, or federal levels
- Demonstrated work with and/or connection to communities, partners, and stakeholders affected by community violence
- Ability to manage and assess multiple programs and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to coordinate effectively with allied organizations, build new relationships, and create partnerships
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to be flexible
- Ability to travel
- Sense of humor and interest in working closely with people
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
