Communications Fellow, Summer & Fall 2019 (Northern Virginia)


NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia seeks a Communications Fellow who will work closely with the Communications Manager to execute electoral, legislative, and advocacy campaigns through efforts to communicate with our membership, the public, and the press. The position will be responsible for assisting in internal and external communications with members, activists, volunteers and the media. The fellow will gain skills and experience necessary for working in communications for a non-profit organization or electoral campaign, as well as knowledge of pro-choice messaging, advocacy, and activism. The fellow will assist the staff in communicating with NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's members and activists through our website, blog, email listserv, and social media platforms. The fellow will have opportunities to contribute to NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's program work to support pro-choice education, awareness and activism across the Commonwealth of Virginia.


This position will be hired ASAP and continue through mid-November 2019. The ideal candidate will be available full time (40 hours per week). The majority of fellowship activities will take place in our office located in Old Town Alexandria (Metrorail and Metrobus accessible) during office hours (9am-5pm, Mon-Fri). There may also be some occasional off-site evening and weekend work at local community events.


The position will be paid at $15/hour and we will work with students to receive academic credit, if applicable.


Who We Are
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia (an independent state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America) is dedicated to building and sustaining a constituency that uses the state-level political process to guarantee reproductive freedom for all, including family planning, sexuality education, maternal health care, and safe, legal abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is a grassroots 501(c)(4) organization, with a 501(c)(3) Foundation arm and a political action committee (PAC).


What You'll Do
You will:

·       Collaborate with the Communications Manager to create communications tools that will mobilize supporters to take action and elect pro-choice candidates and elected officials ahead of the 2019 November election in Virginia.

  • Regularly write and update content on website and social media platforms to keep membership informed on current work and action opportunities in Virginia and ensure website content is up-to-date.
  • Brainstorm new ideas to expand social media, blog and website activities and effectiveness and to track social media goals and progress.
  • Monitor statewide media on a daily basis for relevant news stories; gather and record news clips; maintain media tracking sheet.
  • Help respond to or publicize breaking news through social media and press/blogger outreach.
  • Help draft sample letters to the editor and op-ed pieces for activists or for personal submission and help edit pieces drafted by staff members.
  • Learn and utilize CRM platforms (NGP EveryAction and VAN) for email campaigns and list management.
  • Help with various administrative activities, such as filing, data entry, mailings, as necessary.

Who You Are
To be successful in this position, you:

·       Are a current student or recent graduate with dedication to reproductive rights and an interest in learning about the operations of a non-profit advocacy organization.

·       Support and show enthusiasm for NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's mission to defend and expand the full range of reproductive rights and health care options for women, including abortion, birth control, sex education, bearing healthy children, and adoption. Knowledge of current reproductive rights issues and experience with pro-choice or reproductive justice activism is preferred.

  • Are a strong writer, researcher, and editor familiar with Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word and Excel) and some social media applications. Experience with website/blog management (particularly WordPress), desktop publishing, image editing, or other computer skills are a plus, but not required.
  • Have familiarity with progressive online activism, blogging, and social media practices.
  • Have demonstrated interest in the worlds of activism, politics, and/or non-profits – specific experience with communications in these areas is a plus.
  • Are a strong interpersonal communicator and exhibit a professional demeanor.
  • Have strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Can work well both independently and in cooperative decision-making settings.
