Communications Director
This position is based in Las Vegas, NV.
Salary $70,000
Founded in 2016, For Our Future Action Fund and For Our Future run the largest, permanent progressive field program across key states. In 2018, we made over 9 million door knocks and held 1.3 million face-to-face conversations with voters in 7 states. Our turnout operation and innovative program helped restore voting rights to 1.4 million Floridians, expand Medicaid coverage to 400,000 in Virginia, and resulted in sizable electoral progress at the state and federal level, including the pickup of 3 Governor mansions, 1 Senate seat, 13 Congressional seats, and 22 state legislative seats.
FOF will continue to grow and win through 2020, building power across issue fights and elections. Headquartered in Washington, DC, our current state programs include Florida, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
JOB SUMMARY
For Our Future Nevada is seeking full-time Communications Director. The Communications Director will be responsible for developing and implementing an overarching communications plan and crafting a narrative framework around which For Our Future Nevada will organize what both reflects our values and furthers the overall strategic plan and goals. They will also manage the day-to-day duties of the Digital Organizer and assist the For Our Future leadership team in developing and executing strategic statewide issue advocacy and electoral programs. The Communications Director reports directly to the State Director.
Successful candidates will also bring all or most of the following skills and attributes to this position: a commitment to teamwork; have an exceptional ability to stay organized, to manage their time effectively, and to juggle several priorities that may change quickly; and finally possess a keen attention to detail.
Work will, at times, be scheduled in the evenings and/or weekends. This position requires creativity and flexibility due to the fast-paced nature and mission of our organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Communications Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
● Working with the State Director to ensure that all communications materials, communicators, and assets are in step with overall strategic plan and goals;
● Writing content for internal and external communications including but not limited to: social media posts, emails, text messages, websites, and other online content, as well as digital actions, literature, mail, or other paid advertising.
● May also be asked to assist with field scripts, and other materials requiring proper message delivery;
● Assisting in the development and implementation of earned media plans, building media events, and garnering sufficient press coverage;
● Responding to all press inquiries as well as seeking, building, and maintaining relationships with key state reporters;
● Monitoring social media and new local digital channels from across the political and non-political spectrum and providing guidance on rapid response strategy; and will help recruit, manage and train a rapid response network in both southern and northern Nevada;
● Participating in the IE coalition and progressive partner communications infrastructure, the Nevada "Comms Hub", on behalf of For Our Future Nevada;
● Working with the team in Washington D.C. to identify local stories that can or should be nationalized.
Digital Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
● Completely integrating traditional and digital communications into the same strategy and plan;
● Using new tools and tactics to increase the social media reach of For Our Future and progressive partners profiles, advancing our ability to amplify our message to new audiences;
● Providing strategic advice to For Our Future Nevada our partners on how to utilize digital tactics and tools to support volunteer recruitment, voter turnout, and building digital infrastructure; list acquisition, creating and approving digital content, digital ad buying, and campaign design as well as assisting with digital needs for community events;
● Manage the Digital Organizer to ensure that all social media channels are updated regularly with original content, including graphics;
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
● A passion for progressive causes and advocating and communicating authentic stories about Nevadans;
● Creativity in message development, delivery, and plan design, with the ability to look at communications challenges differently, and respond with innovative solutions;
● Fluency in Spanish (speaking, reading, and writing) preferred;
● Demonstrated experience with successfully placing print and digital stories, op-eds and ensuring appropriate messages are placed in proactive and reactive stories;
● Experience in media relations with a strong preference for political and campaign communications experience;
● Social media account management experience required;
● Proven problem-solving skills, solutions-oriented approaches, a willingness to take the initiative, and an eagerness to learn;
● Ability to develop long-term plans, set objectives, and track progress toward achieving objectives;
● Experience working on projects in a fast-paced environment;
● Exercise good judgment in high-pressure situations and maintain a calm demeanor under stress;
● Ability to work both independently and as a team member in a busy office with personal enthusiasm, optimism, and a sense of humor;
● Must have reliable access to transportation
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
● Manage the Digital Organizer who is based in Northern Nevada.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
● Work is performed in an open office environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
● The physical demands of the job include bending and sitting for extended periods.
● Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
● Normal hours of business are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday thru Friday, however, employees may be required to work outside of normal business hours including weekends, holidays and nights.
● Employees may be required to abide by certain blackout dates during a campaign cycle, and generally not allowed to take more than 2-3 days off consecutively. Emergencies are not affected by this policy.
