The UFCW is seeking a State Legislative Representative to assist with
development of proactive working families/state legislative agenda and
provide the strategic policy support to help local union offices to
implement it.
The UFCW is the largest private sector union in the United States,
presenting 1.3 million professionals and their families in grocery stores,
meatpacking, food processing, retail shops and other industries. Our
members help put food on our nation's tables and serve customers in all 50

The State Legislative Representative will also coordinate legislative
strategies and policy support for campaigns fighting back state legislative
attacks on working families. Develop legislative campaigns and
relationships with partner organizations.
*Duties and Responsibilities*
- Represents the UFCW on legislative issues in States, at the AFL-CIO,
with UFCW employers, and with partners and allied coalitions.
- Analyzes state legislation.
- Writes weekly and full session reports on state legislation. Daily
session reports as needed.
- Conducts research on key labor issues of importance to UFCW.
- Write, edit and fact check: issue fact sheets, talking points, letters
and other materials for a variety of audiences from rank and file union
members; union leadership; elected officials and media.
- Tracks and evaluates on a continuing basis pending legislative,
regulatory and legal action at the state, and local level that may have an
impact on UFCW members, wages and working conditions, industries we
represent, families, and communities.
- Establish and maintain a presence within the diverse progressive
policy community and with our industry partners to be an influential voice
when they are seeking to introduce new legislation and modify provisions in
existing bills.
- Public speaking to a wide variety of audiences
- Proactive outreach and continuous contact with local unions to
encourage them reach out and voice their concern or support for bills at
the local level that affect our membership base.
- Participate in the development and implementation of short and
long-term strategy planning for the department.
- Responds orally and in writing to government officials, union
officers, local union representatives, and partners.
- Attends and represents the UFCW at conferences and meetings as well as
at seminars and training programs for union officers, staff, or members on
legislative issues. Prepare for and attend meetings, state and local hearings,
conferences, and other events to advance or defeat legislation.
- Extensive travel and long/irregular hours required. Please note that
this position is responsible for coverage of multiple states in various
time zones. Schedule is determined by area covered to adequately service
these offices and accommodate the time difference, in-office work hours
outside of the standard headquarters work hours will be required at minimum
two days a week.
*Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in Political Science, History, Communications or
related field (or equivalent related experience) and at least 5 years of
substantial experience in legislative work or relevant education.
Experience developing policy. Previous experience in the labor movement is
desirable.
- Must have extensive knowledge of the legislative process. Must have a
commitment to advancing UFCW values, missions and goals.
- Exceptional analytical, research, writing and oral communications
skills.
- Must be able to keep organized, manage several projects simultaneously
and adjust strategy to changing demands.
- Must be able to analyze and interpret legislative and regulatory
proposals, and develop strategies to influence appropriate government
agencies.
- Requires strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively
with elected union officers and staff, with government officials and others
on behalf of the UFCW, sometimes concerning highly charged and important
legislative and political issues.
