[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] Data Scientist at Pete for America (South Bend, IN)

Pete for America is building our data and analytics team in our South Bend headquarters, and we need people who have experience working with data and organizing.

The campaign is run by a small, well-organized, and motivated team, backed by volunteers and supporters across the country. We're searching for hard-working and kind people to join us. We are committed to radical transparency and fairness, and are steadfast in our work to share Pete's vision with the country. We don't stand for harassment or discrimination of any kind.

Mayor Pete is a different type of politician, and we are a different kind of team. Our goals require collaboration across all departments and our structure facilitates that.

As a key contributor on our analytics team, you'll work with data from surveys, the voter file, historical election results, the census, volunteer actions, donors, and qualitative feedback to generate insights and intelligence to inform campaign strategy.

You will get to work on answering and reporting on important questions, such as:
  • How do we identify and engage supporters?
  • How do we most effectively use our precious volunteer capacity?
  • How likely is a volunteer to take action?
  • How do we most efficiently allocate resources for our paid communications?
  • Which voters should we prioritize for outreach?
  • What is our pathway to victory?
  • What can we conclude from the results of a randomized trial?
You might be a good fit if you:
  • Have experience working in data & analytics for at least one previous campaign or political advocacy group
  • Feel at home with large databases: All of our data is stored in Amazon Redshift, so a lot of exploration happens in SQL (though we're not dogmatic about how you explore data)
  • Are comfortable working in a scientific computing language: Some of the folks on staff write in Python, others in R -- we don't feel strongly about how you analyze the data as long as you have some familiarity outside of spreadsheets (though spreadsheets are great too!)
  • Enjoy working with engineers, data scientists, and a range of campaign staff to solve problems that will help our organization more effectively win votes
  • Are clear about what you know and what you don't know. PFA has a diverse set of data scientists, strategists, and engineers who can all help you succeed in this role if you know when to ask for help
  • Are a good communicator: This doesn't mean that you have to make really pretty powerpoints, but the impact of research is limited by how it gets translated and transmitted to practitioners. Being able to clearly communicate your findings will be paramount to your success
  • Are passionate about helping Pete for America drive impact through data-driven decisions
  • Are dedicated to progressive values
  • Are a creative collaborator
Pete for America is an equal opportunity employer. We believe every employee has the right to work in an environment free from unlawful discrimination as is consistent with our commitment to diversity, respect, and inclusion.

Pete for America provides all employees and applicants with equal opportunity in all aspects of the employment relationship.
