Oil Change International (OCI) is seeking a senior campaigner to drive forward our strategy and campaigning to move governments and institutions to stop the expansion of oil and gas extraction.

Shortly after the Paris Agreement was signed, OCI released groundbreaking analysis showing that, even if global coal use is phased out overnight, the oil and gas in already-operating fields around the world would push us well above 1.5°C of warming. The implications for climate leaders are clear: Meeting the Paris goals will require stopping the expansion of the oil and gas industry and planning for a just and equitable phase-out of fossil fuel production. More countries and public financial institutions are becoming "first movers" and beginning to act towards these aims – for example, by banning new oil and gas licenses, ending finance for oil and gas projects, or planning for a managed and just transition. But we urgently need to build more momentum that translates into real action. In this position, you will be a member of OCI's Energy Transitions and Futures team and work with international and national partners to shape, support, and execute our campaigns.

Your work would include (i) strategy development, (ii) direct advocacy with decision-makers, (iii) coordination with coalitions and partner organizations, and (iv) supporting strategic communications efforts to amplify and build momentum around "first mover" commitments.

If you are passionate about climate action, understand we cannot effectively tackle this crisis without taking on the fossil fuel industry, and have versatile experience in strategy development, direct advocacy, coalition building, and strategic communications, this is the role for you.

Roles and Responsibilities

Strategy development

  • Work within the OCI team as well as with coalition partners to develop strategies to build, communicate, and leverage momentum towards the phase-out of oil and gas production.

Direct advocacy

  • Conduct direct advocacy with governments and officials at strategic institutions to advance OCI strategies to grow the group of "first mover" countries and institutions committing to phase out oil and gas production and finance.

Partner engagement & coordination

  • Engage with civil society partners already working on this agenda internationally, and participate in regular discussions and planning with these partners;
  • Identify and build relationships with aligned civil society partners in key countries and sub-national jurisdictions.

Strategic communications

  • Work with the OCI communications team to develop and implement a strategic communications plan related to first mover commitments. Our goal is to build these victories into a drumbeat of momentum that pushes restrictions on fossil fuel production onto the international agenda and makes it clear that governments and institutions cannot be climate leaders without a plan to phase out extraction.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of experience in a senior role involving strategy development, campaign execution, and project management;
  • Experience working in coalition and coordinating with civil society partners;
  • Strong familiarity with climate, energy, and financial policy, specifically issues around fossil fuel extraction and infrastructure, public and private financing of fossil fuels, and climate change mitigation policies;
  • Minimum three years of experience in government relations or direct advocacy with decision-makers;
  • Strategic communications experience, such as: pitching stories to media, writing press releases, and developing other communications materials (emails to supporters, drafting social media materials, writing op-eds, etc.);
  • Commitment to the mission of OCI and an approach to the work grounded in social justice and equity; and
  • A plus but not required:
    • Related experience or issue knowledge in the United Kingdom;
    • Familiarity with energy scenarios and their role in financial and political decision making (particularly those of the International Energy Agency)
    • Understanding and experience in fossil fuel private finance campaigning.
