A young and growing nonprofit dedicated to supporting election reforms in the United States is seeking an individual with strong research, communications, and organizational skills, a solid understanding of U.S. election administration, and a commitment to cross-partisanship, for the position of Election Reform Fellow.
Election Reformers Network (ERN) is a nonpartisan 501c3 advocacy organization and donor cooperative founded by election experts with extensive experience in election reform in the U.S. and overseas. ERN actively supports reforms such as ranked-choice voting, anti-gerrymandering, and electoral college reform. This support is provided through grants from our membership funds for specific initiatives, usually at the state level, along with research and writing to promote these reforms more generally. ERN has recently received grant support for a program to assess conflicts of interest faced by secretaries of state and other state chief election officers.
POSITION SUMMARY
Election Reformers Network is seeking a paid Election Reform Fellow to provide broad-based support to the organization and to the chief election officer conflict of interest project. This position will require a commitment of 20 to 25 hours per week on average, in the context of a flexible, mutually-agreed-upon schedule. Roles and responsibilities will likely include:
· Research and data analysis related to a range of election reform issues;
· Participation in and analysis of interviews with current and former chief election officers;
· Support in the preparation of reports, op-eds, articles and powerpoint presentations;
· Monitoring and providing briefings on election administration news and developments;
· Organizational support including:
o Oversite of grantee activity;
o Monitoring and updating the organization's website and social media activities;
o Some logistics and travel support
o Supporting member development and recruitment activities, including evaluating and improving email marketing activities;
This role offers a unique opportunity to be a part of the solutions to the country's pressing democracy challenges. ERN is committed to developing election solutions that can benefit and gain support from a wide range of political perspectives; for that reason, it is essential that the candidate be open-minded, non-dogmatic, and skilled at understanding and working with a wide range of people and perspectives.
This position will report to the Executive Director, in Newton MA. Office space is available for a Fellow based in the Washington DC or Boston areas; the Fellow may also work remotely.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
· Deep passion for strengthening American democracy, and a commensurate ability to understand different political perspectives and work toward broadly supported solutions;
• Ideally, prior experience and/or study providing an understanding of the structures of election administration in the United States;
• Bachelor's degree required; political science, history, or similar major preferred;
• Demonstrated experience in research related to public policy and state law;
• Experience with email marketing and website management
• Strong analytical and communication skills (particularly writing and powerpoint);
• Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy; and
• Flexibility and initiative to work both independently and as part of a team.
