Electoral Grassroots Organizer – Rochester, MN

Under the supervision of the Field Organizer the Electoral Grassroots Organizer has lead responsibility for building a network of activists and leaders for the organization in Rochester and the surrounding area. The Electoral Grassroots Organizer is responsible for recruiting new supporters, engaging activists, and developing volunteer leaders to encourage grassroots activism and voting in 2020. The Electoral Grassroots Organizer develops and executes the plan to further the programmatic goals of Planned Parenthood North Central States (PPNCS) and Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund (PPMNSAF). The Electoral Grassroots Organizer is an advocate in implementing our mission of "Affirming the human right to reproductive health and freedom." Performs other related duties as assigned. This position runs through the 2020 Election.
Responsibilities
Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement geographically specific organization outreach, organizing, and voter engagement plans.
- Develop and execute advocacy and electoral strategies to further the geographically specific campaigns of the organization.
- Ensure organizing, base building, advocacy, and electoral goals are met.
- Ensure data and reporting requirements are met.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
Recruitment
- Assist in development and lead execution of geographically specific plans for generating potential new supporters and leaders.
- Create and participate in opportunities to expand our reach, meet new potential supporters, and generate new leaders.
Mobilization
- Assist in development and lead execution of a geographically specific plan for engaging our supporters in opportunities to advance our programmatic goals.
- Create events and activities that excite supporters and inspire participation.
- Create and execute plans to mobilize people to vote in the 2020 election.
Leadership Development
- Develop and execute a plan that deepens the engagement of strong supporters and strengthens their commitment to PPNCS and PPMNSAF.
- Create leadership opportunities for supporters that create opportunities for responsibility, skill development, and ownership of work.
- Lead local Action Councils and other volunteer leaders in assigned geographic regions with the goal of having volunteer-led actions.
Grassroots Advocacy and Organizing
- Assist in creation and development of grassroots campaign plans that support PPNCS and PPMNSAF's programmatic goals.
- Engage PPNCS and PPMNSAF's base of supporters in grassroots campaign activities, including but not limited to phone banking, canvassing, online advocacy and events.
- Engage and organize college students and youth in advocacy and voter turnout.
- Serve as a health resource to the community by attending community events, serving on local committees, etc.
- Engage volunteers and supporters in electoral initiatives. This may include:
- Issue education
- Candidate education
- Voter engagement and turnout
ADDITIONAL DUTIES ASSIGNED TO ALL EMPLOYEES
Program Support
- Always represent the organization positively in public by acting as a professional representative and ambassador
- Support the mission and goals of the organization across all departments
Administration
- Maintain accountability to administrative systems and procedures, including submitting expense reimbursements, credit card reconciliations, invoices, by the deadlines assigned, as well as informing other staff of activities
- Participate actively in staff meetings and retreats and Board meetings when requested
- Plan, track, and report on individual and departmental work in support of organizational coordination and synergy
- Contribute content for organizational communications and marketing materials
Coordination
- Coordinate with Field Organizer to develop outreach and organizing plans
- Coordinate with Field Organizer to ensure that our organizing supports our advocacy objectives
Work Hours
Full-time position working 40 hours per week.
This position is eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, flex accounts, long-term disability, life insurance, PTO, extended illness leave, volunteer time off, paid holidays, and 403(b) retirement plan.
Required Qualifications
- One to three years combined experience in grassroots community organizing, campaign experience, and/or volunteer management
- Outstanding people skills
- Strong organizational, communications, computer, problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Highly self-motivated and directed
- Willingness and ability to work well with high-level volunteers; strong ability to lead and engage volunteers
- Willingness to travel throughout the MN region; this position requires driving and the employee must provide proof and copies of insurance and valid driving license
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
- Proven competency with voter/supporter database software; experience with VAN and EveryAction software
