Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio (PPAO) provides strategic advocacy, policy, community organizing, and electoral programming for Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region. The communications manager will work to enhance Planned Parenthood's government affairs and public advocacy communication outreach. The person in this role will work with political director and vice president of government affairs and public advocacy as well as the PPAO team to develop and implement proactive communication plans to increase awareness of Planned Parenthood's legislative strategies and positions with policymakers, internal associates, supporters, outside stakeholders, and the general public. The communications manager is the primary writer for statewide, targeted, and regular multi-channel communication as well as responsible for developing talking points, fact sheets, testimony, briefs, and other supportive material on legislative policy and electoral campaigns. The advocacy issues include family planning, contraceptive equity, access to emergency contraceptives, comprehensive sex education, and access to the full breath of reproductive health care including safe, legal abortion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain proactive and flexible communication plans.
- Write PPAO statewide, targeted, and internal communication pieces using distinctive voices representing different PPAO leaders for appropriate audiences.
- Develop supporting documents for legislation, policy, advocacy, and electoral campaigns.
- Collaborate with PPAO colleagues on professional communications for PPAO colleagues, leadership, and board members.
- Support and draft testimony on state and local policy and legislation.
- Author op-eds, letter to the editor, and other external pieces for PPAO leadership, board members, patient advocates, and volunteers.
- Compose press releases, media advisories, memos, talking points, op-eds, social media and web content, and other materials as needed under tight deadlines.
- Assist in the execution of press events at the Statehouse and at major events to highlight government relations efforts, issues, and supporters.
- Support communications and advocacy teams in trainings and helps prepares spokespeople for media availability and press opportunities.
- Identify opportunities for policy communication around educational programming, reproductive health conferences, legislative issues rallies, and public advocacy activities.
- Coordinate with other affiliate staff members and serves as an inter-departmental liaison on public policy editorial content.
- Support multi-channel and diverse communication needs of the PPAO team.
- Provide written government affairs content for the website and social media platforms as well as fundraising materials.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily including:
- Requires a bachelor's degree and 1-3 years of experience with a background in communication, nonprofits, campaigns, policy, public affairs, or government relations experience.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to work within tight deadlines.
- The capability to build communications plans while leaving bandwidth to manage any critical spontaneous situations.
- Must have a working knowledge of the Ohio legislative process.
