NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia seeks a full-time Richmond Community Organizer to advance our state-level advocacy, organizing, and political work for reproductive rights and health care access. The Richmond Community Organizer will work closely with the Campaigns Director and coalition partners to conduct grassroots activities and engage activists while building capacity and infrastructure for an issue-based campaign around reproductive freedom, personal rights, and women's health. During election seasons, the community organizer will work closely with the Campaigns Director and NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia and NARAL Pro-Choice America-endorsed campaigns to build teams of volunteers, engage voters on our issues, and elect pro-choice candidates. Our ideal candidate is a highly motivated, results-oriented, outgoing, and pro-choice person with prior political and/or community-based organizing experience to lead and manage our grassroots activities in Richmond, Virginia.
Who We Are
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia (NPCV) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and advancing reproductive rights and health care access at the state level through policy advocacy, grassroots activism, and political organizing. With the support of tens of thousands of member-activists, we build political power for pro-choice Virginians and work to ensure every woman can make the personal reproductive health care decisions that are best for herself and her family – including preventing unplanned pregnancy, having healthy pregnancies and births, and accessing abortion.
NPCV is an independent state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America and is made up of three entities: our main 501(c)(4) policy and political arm; the 501(c)(3) NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Foundation, which oversees our grassroots advocacy, training and education programming; and the NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Political Action Committee. Our staff of 10 is located across a central office in Old Town Alexandria, VA and satellite offices in Richmond and Hampton Roads.
What You'll Do
You will:
Community Organizing & Culture Change Work
- Develop and implement local grassroots campaigns to organize and engage new pro-choice activists and change the cultural conversation around reproductive freedom. Campaign priorities include, but are not limited to, the de-stigmatization of abortion, expanding birth control access, improving women's health care options, exposing crisis pregnancy centers and fighting anti-choice attacks on the local and statewide level.
- Create comprehensive campaign strategies to identify and meet program objectives. Must be able to assess progress of project, implement new strategies if necessary, and present relevant plans to a variety of audiences, including NPCV staff, allies, and volunteers.
- Build a broad coalition of Richmond-area community partners to support, strengthen, and expand campaign efforts at the grassroots level. Coalition should include local issue-based organizations, faith leaders, educators, college students, parents, elected officials, and others as required to meet campaign goals.
- Grow and maintain a local core activist and volunteer base, including implementation of a volunteer leadership program and regular activist trainings.
- Assist with development and implementation of appropriate and effective campaign messaging, including story gathering. Promote campaign through online organizing and social media avenues.
- Track progress regularly with qualitative and quantitative reports, weekly supervisor check-ins, and monthly reports to NPCV staff, Board of Directors, and coalition partners.
Electoral Organizing
- Collaborate with endorsed statewide and state Senate/House of Delegates electoral campaigns to develop region-specific voter outreach plans to engage and educate voters on reproductive rights and elect pro-choice candidates.
- Train volunteers and activists on how to canvass and phonebank in support of pro-choice candidates.
- Lead and participate in phonebanking and canvassing efforts during election seasons.
Legislative Advocacy
- Organize and manage civic engagement activities including phone banks, tabling events, and canvasses for legislative and issue-based initiatives. Design and create grassroots outreach materials, when necessary.
- Attend, testify in, and recruit volunteers for relevant committee hearings and floor votes during the Virginia General Assembly legislative session.
Student Fellow Mentorship
- Provide mentorship to our paid Student Advocacy Fellows attending Richmond-area universities; offering programmatic guidance, event support, and community organizing modeling.

- Have access to reliable transportation and ideally, a driver's license (owning a car is not required but position does require regular travel around the Richmond region and, occasionally, elsewhere in the state).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Richmond communities and constituents, including local elected officials and community organizations.
- Proficiency in Spanish a plus.
- Experience working with voter management programs (i.e. VAN, Catalist, etc.), online advocacy tools, and predictive dialer systems.
- Experience working or volunteering on electoral campaigns a plus, though not required.

This position is full-time (exempt), based out of our Bureau in Richmond, Virginia. The Richmond Community Organizer will report to the Organizing Manager and will manage a paid part-time intern during the summer. The position requires some travel and some evening and weekend hours.
Your salary and benefits are competitive for the marketplace. Starting compensation is in the low $40Ks (commensurate with experience), plus a robust benefits package including health, vision, dental, long-term disability, and life insurance plans, as well as retirement plan and generous paid time off.
