Zero Debt Massachusetts (ZDM) is hiring a Community Organizing and Policy Director to build and manage ZDM's grassroots organizing around zero debt. The Director will design and oversee strategies to engage, mobilize and grow ZDM's grassroots base and target constituency groups in support of ZDM legislative and campaign priorities. These constituency groups will include high school and college age students, alumni, and their families. The Director will supervise the Campus and Community Organizing Manager and oversee the work of ZDM Campus Organizers and Community Leaders.
ABOUT ZDM:
Zero Debt Massachusetts (ZDM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing access and affordability to the higher education system by utilizing grassroots activism, awareness building, and community engagement. ZDM is building a movement of thousands of Zero Debt advocates by raising awareness about the student debt crisis and amplifying the voices of those impacted. Among ZDM's key organizing strategies are:
- Actions and Long-Term campaigns on campuses and the community
- Grassroots Advocacy in Boston and across the state
- Partnerships with mission-aligned organizations and key stakeholders
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the ZDM Executive Director, the Community Organizing and Policy Director is responsible for leading the organizing and policy advocacy strategies for the organization and managing the organizing team in the creation and implementation of efforts that further the strategic goals of ZDM. Specific responsibilities include:
- Supervision, coaching and development of community organizing team.
- Annual preparation of workplan and evaluation of organizing staff.
- Planning and implementation of strategy and plan for community outreach efforts by ZDM Leaders to students, alumni, families, and other stakeholders to involve them in ZDM advocacy events and activities.
- Planning and implementation of ZDM Campus Organizing campaigns around student loan debt and tuition increases (currently active at UMASS Boston and Northeastern).
- Support ZDM Executive Director in policy advocacy and maintaining communication with state legislative leaders around Zero Debt legislative priorities.
- Develop and maintain relationships with community and institutional partners, elected officials, and other stakeholders.
- Support Executive Director around fundraising, including review and editing of fundraising proposals.
- Provide staffing support for regular ZDM Advisory Group events/meetings
- Oversee ZDM social media campaigns - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
QUALIFICATIONS
- Commitment to ZDM's mission and organizing principles
- At least 5 years community organizing and policy advocacy experience required
- Successful experiencing recruiting, training, supervising, and developing organizing staff
- Demonstrated strategic thinking and political analysis skills
- Strong public speaking and written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to work effectively with people from diverse racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Strong time and task management skills
- Social media and media relations experience a plus
- Willingness to work flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends
- Lived experience with student debt issue a plus
