Media Matters for America—a progressive, Washington, D.C.-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media—seeks a candidate with expertise in media relations and rapid response outreach and management to serve as the Media Relations Manager.
 
Role Summary:
The Media Relations Manager works to improve media coverage of Media Matters' daily content, brand, and research and data expertise. The person in this position will lead on rapid-response media outreach around MMFA content and breaking news, compiling press releases and talking points, creation and maintenance of strong relationships with media contacts, and daily outreach to print/online and broadcast contacts and outlets to pitch and story shape around both Media Matters and related breaking news.
 
Reporting Structure:
      The Media Relations Manager reports to the Deputy Communications Director.
 
Responsibilities: 
 
Media Relations
      Pitches Media Matters content aligned with the breaking news cycle.
      Aggressively books Media Matters spokespeople for print/online and television opportunities, and ensures that television producers, reporters, and pundits are aware of the content that we produce daily. This involves:
o   Building and maintaining relationships with producers and bookers in an effort to promote the work and mission of Media Matters.
      Monitors daily news cycle for relevant areas to integrate Media Matters' voice and answers urgent press/media requests in a timely manner.
 
Collateral Creation
      Leads on drafting press releases, statements, op-eds, media advisories, talking points, and other press-facing materials for targeted press contacts.
      Maintains lists of print, broadcast, and other media contacts to proactively pitch on a daily and weekly basis.
 
Management
      Has shared supervision (with the Deputy Communications Director) of the communications associate, who provides day-to-day support for the Communications Department including booking and preparing staff for radio and podcast interviews, building media lists, and performing research as needed for press requests.

Required Qualifications: 
      At least 5 years of PR or media relations experience preferably in the nonprofit or public sector and/or in politics.
      Excellent storytelling abilities and capacity to frame Media Matters' content in a clear and compelling way to external audiences.
      Comprehensive understanding of AP style and grammar to review and copy edit press releases, statements, email marketing materials, blogs, and pitch memos.
      Experience securing impactful press placements, thinking outside the box to create media moments, and identifying elements with viral potential.
      Interest in media and understanding of the effects conservative misinformation has on the public debate, plus understanding of working within the 24-hour news cycle.
      Strategic thinker who brings new ideas to the table and love a good brainstorm.
      Ability to quickly synthesize information about new topics.
      Proven track record of strong oral and written communication skills.
      Likes teamwork, but can work independently day-to-day.
      Ability to plan and manage under a tight deadline.
      Ability to multitask and adjust in fast-paced and high-pressure situations.

Media Matters for America—a progressive, Washington, D.C.-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media—seeks a candidate with expertise in engaging with advocacy organizations, cultivating and elevating issue-specific content (including but not limited to social justice, reproductive rights, climate/science, and extremism and disinformation), and sustaining and executing long-term projects to serve as the Communications Manager.
 
Role Summary:
The Communications Manager (Long-Term & Special Projects) works closely with Media Matters' special program teams and the Deputy Communications Director to develop media pitch angles and outreach strategies to help bolster long-term and special projects and content to the wider public.
 
Reporting Structure:
      The Communications Manager reports to the Deputy Communications Director.
 
Responsibilities: 
 
Advocacy and Partner Outreach
      Serves as a thought partner with the Deputy Communications Director on outreach and strategy to external MMFA partners related to MMFA special programs and priority initiatives. Those initiatives include tech/social media accountability and Fox News accountability.
      Attends coalition and partner organization meetings to flag and promote MMFA's data and research expertise. Develops ways to integrate that information into partner organizations' priorities and builds relationships with pertinent contacts.
      Identifies existing event opportunities for MMFA staff to participate in and helps to create and execute events.
 
Media Relations
      Flags rapid response content produced by Media Matters for issue-specific media contacts (including but not limited to immigration, education, health care, social justice, abortion rights and reproductive health, climate and energy, and guns and public safety)
      Identifies new press contacts around special program area content and studies, which may include light touch outreach to press contacts
      Consult on rapid response press facing materials on Media Matters' priority initiatives
 
Collateral Creation
      Assists in writing advocacy-focused sign-on letters, emails, and sample social media content.
      Create compelling content that mobilizes Media Matters' supporters and partners to participate in Media Matters campaigns, and assists with the creation of campaign assets with MMFA staff members, including consulting on graphics and videos concepts.
      Assists in compiling and writing strategy and success documents.
      Assists in creating products for both media and external affairs audiences.

Required Qualifications:
      At least 4 years of PR and media relations or strategic communications and writing experience, preferably in community engagement, the nonprofit or public sector, politics, or regulatory matters.
      Strong understanding of issue-based and/or advocacy causes and/or has been part of an advocacy campaign.
      Experience developing and executing digital campaigns as well as long term and special projects.
      Experience securing impactful press placements and thinking outside the box to create media moments.
      Clear sense of the political media landscape and on top of the latest breaking political news.
      Strong decision-making abilities and accountability.
      Incredibly organized, detail-oriented, and able to excel at managing multiple projects simultaneously.
      Track record of success with placing political or cause stories in national or regional outlets.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
      Established relationships with progressive allies and experience working in coalitions, with the ability to grow and steward Media Matters' outreach in this area.
      Experience working with issue-based and/or advocacy causes or has been part of an advocacy campaign.

Role Summary:
The Communications Associate will provide day-to-day support for the Communications Department, perform research as needed for press requests, and assist with internal data findings. The person in this position will also assist with administrative support for media outreach and communication of activities and products related to the work of MMFA.
 
Reporting Structure:
      The Communications Associate reports to the Media Relations Manager (Rapid Response). 
 
Responsibilities
 
Media Relations
      Maintains a database of reporter distribution lists, updates contact info as needed, identifies reporters to add to existing lists, and generates new distribution lists to advance organizational goals.
      Assists on pitching MMFA spokespeople and content for booking opportunities with an emphasis on radio and podcast contacts.
      Serves as the point of contact for any rapid response research needs for requests pertaining to press outreach and follow-up.
      Flags and/or answers inbound media requests.
      Assists in drafting media materials including press releases, media advisories, talking points, messaging memos, etc. for long-term projects, activations, and initiatives.
      Distributes daily press clippings, compiles a weekly round-up of Media Matters' press coverage, and tracks quarterly and annual trends in media coverage.
 
Collateral Creation
      Creates a weekly communications update for the president of the organization that demonstrates Media Matters' impact.
      Pulls together briefing memos/documents for press interviews and/or speaking engagements/conferences for MMFA spokespeople and staff members.
 
Communications Support
      Oversees all administrative tasks for the communications team including daily scheduling of media requests and department meetings, onboarding Communication Department interns, and providing logistics support for events, and also assists in the management of department interns.
      Identifies and pitches conferences, speaking opportunities, and other high-profile opportunities for the organization and MMFA staff members.
 
Required Qualifications: 
      2+ years of experience in communications and/or public relations.
      Demonstrated knowledge and interest in the media and current events.
      Experience using research database tools including LexisNexis, Cision, BuzzSumo, Meltwater, etc.
      Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel and Word.
      Strong writing skills – persuasive, concise, creative, and quick; familiarity with AP style preferred.
      Adaptable to new challenges in a rapid-response media environment.
      Excellent oral communication skills.
      Flexibility to work as part of a team as well as independently to meet goals.
      Ability to maintain high quality of work under tight deadlines.
