314 Action Communications Associate Job Description

Philadelphia, PA based with occasional travel


314 Action is the nation's premier organization dedicated to scientific advocacy as well as recruiting, training and electing candidates with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) backgrounds to all levels of public office. In the November elections, 314 Action's scientists led the charge to take back the House, with nine wins for crucial House and Senate races. We raised over $5 million in the 2018 election cycle and are well on our way to raising $20-$25 million for the 2020 election cycle.


For 2020, we helped recruit astronaut Mark Kelly to run for US Senate in Arizona and have raised his campaign over $450k to date. In Colorado our "Draft Hick for Senate" campaign helped convince former geologist and Governor John Hickenlooper to take on Cory Gardner and raised him over $100k in just his first 48 hours in the race. We're also focused on reelecting our eight newly elected scientists to Congress, along with expanding their ranks and helping to build the bench at the state and local levels.


314 Action is looking for a Communications Associate to join our growing communications team heading into the 2020 elections. The Communications Associate will help implement 314 Action's public relations, media relations and campaign communications strategies.


In this position, the Communications Associate will report to the Communications Director in a variety of day-to-day PR and media efforts, with a focus on 314 Action's endorsed federal and statewide candidates and advancing 314 Action's status as a premiere nationally-focused political organization.


Responsibilities:

  • Work to place opposition research and generate stories to further our candidates' messaging

  • Field incoming media inquiries

  • Draft releases, talking points, memos, LTEs, and other relevant content 

  • Oversee social media content

  • Develop and manage earned media events and staff on the ground as needed

  • Help craft and execute rapid response efforts

  • Identify opportunities to push our messaging at national and local levels

  • Produce memos, decks, and other documents on a variety of issues

  • Manage and update press list 

  • Other responsibilities as needed


Experience and Qualifications:

  • Experience communicating with media, principals, and coordinating with diverse groups of stakeholders

  • Ability to meet tight and sometimes changing deadlines

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Superb attention to detail and high level of organization with the ability to multitask 

  • Prior press and/or campaign experience 

  • Commitment to the mission of 314 Action
