Tahirih Justice Center seeks a full-time Community Engagement Coordinator to join its Houston, Texas office. The Houston Policy & Advocacy team drives Tahirih's mission in transforming the local and regional policies and practices that directly impact immigrant survivors of violence.

The Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for supporting the advancement of local and regional strategies that combat the barriers immigrant survivors' face to obtain safety and dignity under the law. Reporting to the Houston Policy & Advocacy Manager, this role will focus heavily on providing administrative support towards moving forward the Houston office's annual policy and advocacy goals – including mobilizing multiple stakeholders in holding local and regional representatives accountable for the safety and justice for immigrant survivors by engaging with law enforcement, community stakeholders and coalitions, outreach and trainings, and drafting content for outward facing publication


This individual must be a self-starter that is highly organized and able to work independently, with a keen eye for attention to detail, and has a thriving passion for social justice.


Primary Responsibilities

Contribute to development and execution of creative strategies that create policies and practices that ensure immigrant survivors have timely and full access to critical protections

  • Assist with issue-related research and analysis;
  • Make recommendations and implement outreach plans, proposals and initiatives in relation to pushing for justice & safety for immigrant survivors of gender-based violence;
  • Maintain communication and a cooperative working relationship with special projects partners, volunteers, and Tahirih local and national staff to ensure projects and partnerships run smoothly;
  • Gather feedback for improving project success;

Expand Tahirih Houston's presence in local and state advocacy and coalition spaces and community partnerships

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including community leaders, area non-profits, public officials, management staff, employees/co-workers, and the general public;
  • Support relationships with local organizations and coalitions who share our values, including both traditional and new allies;
  • Assist with the Tahirih Houston social media presence to educate the public and engage allies, partners, supporters and decision-makers' integrating national resources as necessary;
  • Coordinate targeted community engagement efforts; 
  • Recruit supporters and advocacy volunteers in coordination with the Houston Volunteer Coordinator;
  • Organize and maintain databases for public engagement activities and contacts;

Support the coordination and execution of meetings and convenings 

  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate "Know Your Rights" and community education trainings. This will include training others in the community to conduct these trainings, as well;
  • Coordinate and staff community education events focused on moving forward advocacy across the region;
  • Manage tables at community events and work with volunteers to staff tables;
  • Support staff public-speaking and community appearances by providing materials and maintaining a calendar and record of events;
  • Develop and maintain inventory of Tahirih resources and coordinate their distribution; 

Oversee and coordinate other tasks and special projects as assigned by the Houston Manager of Policy and Advocacy.
