About Community Change and Community Change Action:

Community Change builds the power and capacity of low-income people, especially low-income people of color, to lead powerful and dynamic movements for social change. With our community-based partner groups, we bridge the grassroots and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo while also building pathways to influence the insider conversation.

Our vision of a better world centers the leadership of impacted people of color to move our work on immigrant rights, economic justice, and racial equity, including a focus on jobs and housing, early childhood care and education, income supports, and immigration reform.

This position also supports Community Change Action, an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values – equity, inclusion, and justice – Community Change and Community Change Action operate independently of one another and each organization has its own board of directors.

Position Description:

The central task of the Regional Organizer is to provide multi-state coordination and support to community-based organizations and coalitions, with the ultimate goal of increasing the power and scale of those organizations and coalitions. The Regional Organizer will provide leadership in meeting Reinvestment Team Essential Outcomes and will focus on local and state level reinvestment team campaigns and connecting them, when appropriate, to electoral, immigration, and economic justice work at the national level.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of a cohort of Black-led community organizations in the U.S., primarily focused in the South.
  • Deliver strategic planning assistance and organizational support to partner organizations as part of work to build power in target states and with targeted communities. Assistance and support may include but not be limited to leadership development, fundraising, base building, and power analysis processes.
  • Work with key partners and ally organizations in order to wield political power in their cities and states and to act in concert with one another.
  • Work as a liaison between Community Change's campaign priorities and target state allies and partners.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with leadership organizations in target states.
  • Participate in Community Change All Staff Calls, Community Change Staff Retreats and weekly State Power Building Staff Calls.
  • Represent Community Change in a professional manner within the organization, to Community Based Organizations, funders, allied organizations, in assigned groups, and committees, and at all times to the general public.
  • Comply with Community Change policy that requires all employees to be responsible for administrative duties such as following all due dates on reports, timesheets, and all fiscal and personnel policies and requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Black Led Organizing and Power Building.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 6-10 years' experience in community organizing and in implementing local, state or national policy initiatives on community reinvestment issues.
  • Experienced in community organizing training including: basic principles of community organizing, development of leaders and organizations in an organizing context, issues and campaign development, training new organizers and leadership development.
  • Familiarity with and openness to different approaches to grassroots organizing and policy work.
  • Strong facilitation and relationship building skills.
  • Experience in non-partisan electoral work is helpful.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizational assessment and development; ability to provide significant help in organizational and coalition development.
  • Strong team player, familiar with team dynamics and willing to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work democratically and effectively with diverse groups and people.
  • Willing to work long flexible hours including nights and weekends and to travel extensively.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Strong commitment to social justice and social change.
  • Familiarity with some of the issues that Community Change currently works on, such as poverty, criminal justice reform, jobs, economic justice, immigration and/or other issues.
  • The ability to produce consistent, quality work in a fast-paced environment is essential.
  • Comfortable using cloud-based technology including Google Suite and dynamic databases like Salesforce.
  • Commitment to advancing economic and race and gender justice.
  • Ability to speak a second language a plus.

This person reports to: Director of Black Led Organizing and Power Building

Classification: Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in Community Change's bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Travel Requirements: 40%-60% of the time.

Salary & benefits: $75,000 – $85,000 annual salary. Community Change also offers an excellent benefits package, which includes 4 weeks of annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave between December 24 and January 1; 8% employer contribution to retirement account after six months of employment (and 3% employer contribution for the first 6 months); and a choice of generous health insurance plans.
