Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Special Assistant with its Poverty to Prosperity Program. The Special Assistant will serve as the primary assistant to the Senior Vice President and Vice President for the Poverty to Prosperity Program—managing their schedules, making travel arrangements, providing any other administrative assistance as necessary, and helping to facilitate day-to-day operations. Additionally, the Special Assistant will provide general assistance to the Poverty team by coordinating with other teams to handle contracts and reimbursements, organizing and managing metrics to track progress on key goals, and liaising with other policy and outreach teams to work on shared priorities.

This position calls for a highly organized, detail-oriented, and responsible self-starter on whom the policy staff can rely to work independently and deliver high-quality administrative and research support.

Responsibilities:

  • Schedule appointments, meetings, and conferences as well as coordinate staff and visitor travel.
  • Provide logistical support for all staff meetings, public events, and conferences.
  • Research and maintain records of press coverage and other important metrics for the Poverty team's work.
  • Create, organize, and maintain accurate written and electronic files and databases.
  • Process invoices and other administrative forms.
  • Occasionally draft and/or edit letters, invitations, and other documents.
  • Provide research and advocacy support as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills—a writing test will be required for finalists.
  • 1 to 2 years of professional experience.
  • Interest in poverty policy, advocacy, and communications.
  • Ability to work under pressure and under tight deadlines.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be a self-starter who takes initiative and seeks direction as needed.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to diagnose problems and identify creative solutions.
  • Commitment to American Progress' mission and goals.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70 and is budgeted for $40,000. American Progress offers full and competitive benefit packages. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
